Hörmann FST Fire Rated Sliding Steel Door

The Hörmann FST series represents the benchmark in industrial fire protection. Designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through large openings, this sliding door system combines certified safety with a high-quality aesthetic that suits modern commercial and public buildings.

Ideal for warehouses, shopping centres, underground car parks, and industrial facilities, the FST offers a reliable barrier that remains unobtrusive during normal daily operations.

Reliable Fire Containment

The primary function of the FST is to seal off building zones in the event of a fire. Tested to strict European and British standards, the door is available with fire resistance ratings of 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes (depending on specific configuration and size).

  • Operation: The door is typically held in the open position by an electromagnetic device linked to the building's fire alarm system or smoke detectors.
  • Closing: Upon alarm activation (or power failure), the magnets release, and the door closes automatically via a robust system of counterweights.
  • Speed Control: A radial damper governs the closing speed, ensuring the door shuts steadily and safely without accelerating dangerously.

Construction and Design

Unlike traditional, industrial-looking fire shutters, the Hörmann FST is built from smooth, interlocking steel panels.

  • Panel Thickness: The door leaf is 72mm thick, consisting of fully bonded elements that provide a flush, rigid surface.
  • Finish: Supplied as standard in a durable 'Pearlgrain' galvanised finish. This resistant surface hides minor scratches and wear, making it ideal for high-traffic logistics areas. It can also be factory powder-coated in various RAL colours to match your interior design.
  • Joints: The patented tongue-and-groove panel linkage ensures high stability and creates a tight seal against flames.

Wicket Door Option (Trip-Free)

For large openings that also serve as escape routes or pedestrian thoroughfares, the FST can be fitted with an integrated wicket door.

Uniquely, Hörmann offers this with a trip-free stainless steel threshold. The rail is less than 3mm high, allowing unrestricted passage for wheelchairs, trolleys, and forklifts, preventing accidents while complying with escape route regulations.

Smoke Control

Fire is not the only danger; smoke inhalation is a major risk. The FST can be upgraded with specific smoke-tight seals (compliant with DIN 18095) to stop the passage of toxic fumes, creating a safe zone for evacuation.

Flexible Installation

The system is designed to adapt to complex building structures.

  • Track Options: The guide rail can be mounted to the lintel or the ceiling, depending on headroom.
  • Configuration: Available as a single-leaf door (sliding one way) or a double-leaf bi-parting door (opening from the centre).
  • Flaps and Recesses: If you have little sideroom, niche flaps can be installed to cover the door when it is parked in a wall recess, keeping the look clean and preventing debris build-up.

Optional Electric Operation

While the standard door uses gravity closing for fire safety, daily operation can be automated. The SupraMatic HT operator allows you to open and close the door via push-button, radar, or remote control, making it a functional part of your daily logistics flow rather than just a static fire barrier.

Application

Applications & Suitability – Hörmann FST Fire Sliding Door

The Hörmann FST Fire Sliding Door is an advanced, certified fire protection system designed for large commercial and industrial openings. Its ability to compartmentalise a building in the event of a fire, while allowing seamless access during normal operation, makes it essential for high-traffic environments where safety and flow efficiency are paramount.

1. Warehouses & Logistics Centres

Large distribution hubs require wide openings for forklift traffic and conveyor systems but must also prevent fire from spreading between storage zones. The FST is ideal for:

  • Internal Fire Walls: Sealing off different sections of a warehouse to protect stock and limit damage.
  • Conveyor Openings: Special configurations can be integrated to close around conveyor belts during a fire alarm.
  • Durability: The robust 'Pearlgrain' steel surface withstands the knocks and scrapes typical of busy logistics environments.

2. Underground Car Parks

Fire safety in enclosed car parks is critical due to fuel loads and ventilation challenges. The FST provides a robust fire barrier that can withstand intense heat.

  • Space Efficiency: The sliding mechanism uses minimal depth, maximising parking space compared to swing doors.
  • Wicket Doors: Integrated pedestrian doors with low-profile thresholds allow safe evacuation routes for drivers without needing to open the main heavy door.

3. Shopping Centres & Public Buildings

In retail environments, aesthetics and pedestrian safety are key. The FST blends into the architecture while providing certified protection.

  • Concealed Parking: With the optional "Niche Flap," the door can be hidden behind a false wall during opening hours, maintaining a clean look for shoppers.
  • Smoke Control: The optional smoke-tight sealing ensures that toxic fumes do not enter escape routes, protecting the public during evacuation.

4. Hospitals & Healthcare Facilities

Hospitals require strict fire compartmentalisation to protect patients and sensitive equipment.

  • Hygiene & Cleanliness: The smooth steel surface is easy to clean and maintain.
  • Automated Access: When paired with the SupraMatic HT operator, the door can be used for automated daily access (e.g., for trolleys and beds) while retaining its emergency gravity-close function.

5. Manufacturing Plants

Industrial facilities with hazardous processes or high fire risks use FST doors to isolate production lines.

  • Large Openings: Capable of spanning widths up to 9 metres (and larger in special configurations), allowing movement of large machinery or aircraft parts.
  • Explosion Zones: Suitable for protecting non-hazardous areas from zones with higher fire risks.

6. Hotels & Conference Centres

Where large open spaces are needed for events but must be divisible for fire safety regulations.

  • Wide Spans: Can close off large function rooms or corridors automatically upon alarm activation.
  • Trip-Free Access: The stainless steel wicket door threshold (< 3mm) ensures safe passage for guests in heels or wheelchairs.
