Samson Doors supplies Xpanda manufactured mobile and fixed trackless expandable barriers for securing openings, restricting access and protecting staff-only or public-facing areas in a wide range of commercial, industrial and public sector buildings. These collapsible steel barrier and grille systems provide a practical solution where a permanent tracked system is not required, or where flexibility is important for day-to-day operation.

Stafi-Dor barrier

Trackless expanding barriers are used to close off walkways, doorways, entrances and open areas inside and outside buildings. They expand when needed and fold away when not in use, leaving no floor track and no permanent obstruction across the opening.

Samson Doors offers both lightweight aluminium barriers built for regular access control and heavier galvanised steel barriers designed for stronger physical security, including shopfront protection and after-hours closure. Both are based on a concertina-style trellis mesh that adjusts to the width of the opening, locks in place and can be configured as fixed-end or fully mobile systems.

What is a Trackless Barrier

A trackless expanding barrier is a collapsible security screen formed from hinged vertical and diagonal members so the whole barrier concertinas. When pulled closed, it creates a continuous mesh across the opening. When pushed back, it stacks down to a compact pack against the wall or onto its trolley.

The “trackless” part is important. There is no recessed floor channel and no surface-mounted track to create a trip hazard or obstruct cleaning. Instead, the leading edge runs on wheels, which allows the barrier to cope with uneven floors, thresholds, ramps and external surfaces more easily than many tracked systems.

In practice, it is a simple and effective system: pull it out, lock it, and the area is secured until access is needed again.

How It Works

One end of the barrier is either fixed to a wall bracket or supported on its own wheeled post. The leading stile is pulled across the opening and secured to a receiving post, wall clamp, opposing structure or another barrier section, depending on the layout. To reopen the area, the barrier is unlocked and the lattice folds back on itself into its parked position.

Because the leading edge is wheeled and the trellis structure carries much of its own load, a single person can usually move and deploy even a relatively wide barrier without assistance.

Locking is normally at the meeting stile using a cylinder lock or a padlock-ready hasp. Where controlled key access is important, more specific keying arrangements can be specified as part of the project.

Retail Shops

Trackless expandable barriers are a strong choice for retail shops that need to secure entrances, internal stock zones, sales areas, display sections or back-of-house openings without installing a permanent track across the floor. Their open grille design maintains visibility into the secured area while still creating a strong physical and visual deterrent.

They are especially useful where staff need a barrier that can be opened and closed quickly during trading hours, or where selected parts of the store need to be blocked off temporarily for cleaning, replenishment, maintenance or security reasons. For higher-risk shopfront security, heavier galvanised steel versions are generally the preferred specification.

Shopping Centres

In shopping centres, trackless barriers can be used to secure wide mall openings, kiosks, atriums, service routes and temporary restricted zones. They are particularly well suited to spaces where openings vary in width or layout and where a permanent tracked grille is not the most practical option.

Because multiple units can be connected together, very wide spans can be protected using linked sections with mobile support trolley systems. This makes them suitable for larger commercial environments where barriers may need to cover wider frontages or adapt to changing layouts.

Airports and Transport Buildings

Airports and transport buildings often need temporary access restriction in public circulation spaces, service corridors, staff-only routes and operational areas. A trackless expandable barrier provides a practical way to close these areas quickly without introducing permanent floor tracks that could interfere with cleaning, wheeled traffic or changing operational requirements.

Mobile versions are especially useful where facilities teams need to reposition the barrier regularly or create temporary closures around cleaning, maintenance, security checks or passenger flow control.

Schools and Colleges

Schools, colleges and other education buildings can use trackless barriers to control access to halls, corridors, stairwells, canteens, reception areas, sports facilities and staff-only zones. This is particularly useful outside normal hours, during events, or where safeguarding and access control need to be improved in specific parts of a building.

Because these barriers maintain visibility while clearly blocking movement, they are well suited to environments where supervision remains important. They also provide a more substantial and professional boundary than temporary tape or cones.

Corridors and Stairwells

Corridors and stairwells are often awkward spaces for conventional tracked or rigid barriers, especially where openings are not perfectly straight or where circulation routes must remain unobstructed when the barrier is not in use. A trackless expandable barrier is well suited to these applications because it folds back neatly and extends only when needed.

Right-angle solutions can also be used where the opening turns around a corner or where a straight-line closure is not enough.

Factories and Warehouses

Factories and warehouses can use these barriers across external entrances, loading bays, open warehouse doors, work zones and internal access points where security and separation are needed without the cost or permanence of a full shutter or door system.

They are particularly useful where an opening needs to remain open for ventilation, movement of goods or daytime operation while still requiring visible restriction and a practical physical barrier.

Open Spaces and Public Areas

Trackless barriers are not limited to doorways and corridors. They can also be used in larger open spaces to create protected or restricted zones around maintenance work, hazards, temporary storage, cleaning operations, service points or staff-only areas.

Because multiple sections can be linked together and arranged at angles, enclosed shapes, corner layouts and ring-fenced protected zones can be created within a much larger open-plan environment. This is one of the strongest functional advantages of the system.

Fixed, Mobile and Linked Options

Samson Doors offers both fixed and mobile trackless expandable barrier solutions to suit different buildings and operational requirements. The right arrangement depends on the shape of the opening, the available fixing points, and how often the barrier will be moved.

Fixed End, Mobile Leading Edge

This is the most common arrangement. One end is fixed to a wall, column or other secure structure, while the leading edge pulls out on a wheeled support post and locks into a receiving point on the opposite side. This configuration is ideal for shop entrances, internal corridors and openings between two solid structures.

A fixed-end barrier does not always have to close in one straight line. With the fixed point acting as a pivot, the leading edge can move through a wide arc, making it possible to close off different routes from one barrier depending on how the building is used.

Fully Mobile Barrier

In a fully mobile configuration, both ends are supported on wheeled trolley posts so the barrier can be moved into position and stored elsewhere when not in use. This is useful where there is nothing convenient to fix to, or where the barrier needs to move between different locations during the day.

This type of setup is often suitable for shopping centres, exhibition spaces, hospital corridors and public buildings where layouts or access needs can change.

Locking to the Opposite Side

When extended across the opening, the leading edge can be secured to an opposing wall, post or other suitable structure.

This allows the barrier to create a practical secure line across an opening without requiring permanent floor or head tracks.

Right-Angle and Corner Layouts

Trackless barriers are not limited to straight runs. Two sections can meet at 90 degrees using a corner post, allowing awkward layouts to be closed off more effectively. The same principle can be extended to create enclosed protected zones with multiple sides and corners.

This makes them useful around plant, spill areas, temporary works, shopfloor restrictions or any situation where an enclosed safety zone is needed rather than a single straight-line closure.

Multi Unit Runs for Wide Openings

For larger openings, multiple barriers can be linked together to achieve almost any practical width. Each section connects to the next using support trolley systems, allowing a secure continuous line to run across wide commercial, industrial or public-facing spaces.

This is particularly valuable across forecourts, loading yards, shopping centre frontages, warehouse bays or other very wide openings that exceed the practical span of a single unit.

Direction of Travel and Access Planning

In long linked layouts, each section can be designed to move in the direction that suits the site. Some may open from the left, others from the right, or two sections may meet and lock in the middle.

This matters where access points need to remain at specific positions along the run, such as pedestrian routes, goods access points or operational openings. Planning the movement of each section at survey stage ensures the finished barrier works with the building rather than against it.

Sizes, Stack-Back and Bespoke Manufacture

Samson Doors offers a wide choice of standard size trackless barriers for common applications, with bespoke options available for more unusual widths, heights and layouts. Standard sizes are available for many common applications, while made-to-measure versions can also be supplied.

Typical steel units are based around nominal lengths of 1 metre, 2 metres and 3 metres, with extended widths per unit around 3.5 metres and a typical finished height around 1.57 metres. Aluminium versions can cover a wider span, often from around 1 metre up to 10 metres made to measure, with typical finished heights around 1.2 metres and 1.8 metres.

When folded back, a trackless expanding barrier generally stacks down to around 15–20% of its open width. This is worth allowing for when planning where the barrier will park during the day. Bespoke sizes are available for non-standard openings, unusual heights, wide spans and more awkward layouts that need to fit precisely.

Construction and Materials

The barrier lattice is generally produced in galvanised mild steel for strength, durability and resistance to repeated opening and closing. Locking stiles and jamb elements are often aluminium to reduce weight in the moving parts and improve corrosion resistance around the lock area.

Steel wheeled bases with rubber wheels help the barrier move smoothly over tile, concrete, vinyl, thresholds and many external surfaces. Aluminium-bodied versions are normally the preferred choice where lower weight and regular handling are priorities, while galvanised steel versions are better suited to higher-security applications such as shopfront protection.

Colours and Finishes

Standard finishes are usually powder coated, with white and black being the most common stock options for retail and commercial settings. For warehouses, forecourts and more industrial environments, high-visibility colour combinations can also be useful where the barrier needs to read clearly as a hazard or control line.

Custom colours can be specified where the barrier needs to suit a branded fit-out, a heritage setting or a project where standard finishes would be visually intrusive.
For external or coastal installations, additional treatment may be appropriate depending on the exposure and material selected.

Shopfront and After-Hours Security

One of the most established uses for expanding barriers is after-hours shopfront security. During trading hours the barrier folds neatly to the side, leaving the glazing and entrance visually open. At close of business it pulls across the inside of the opening and locks in place.

The barrier provides a physical line of resistance, but also a strong visual deterrent from outside. For higher-risk retail sectors such as jewellery, electronics and fashion, the galvanised steel range is usually the best fit because it provides a visibly stronger and more security-focused solution.

Practical Specification Advice

When specifying a trackless expanding barrier, a few practical factors matter:

  • Opening width and height.
  • Whether the barrier is for internal or external use.
  • Whether it will be moved frequently or stay in one location.
  • Whether there is a suitable wall, post or structure for fixing and locking.
  • Whether a straight run, corner layout or enclosed zone is required.
  • Whether visibility through the barrier is an advantage or whether privacy is needed instead.
  • Where the barrier will stack when open.
  • Whether a lightweight aluminium model or a stronger galvanised steel model is the better fit.

Ground conditions should also be considered. Trackless barriers cope well with uneven surfaces compared with tracked systems, but very steep slopes, deep joints or heavily broken ground can still affect wheel movement. Staff using the barrier should also be shown how to operate it safely to avoid pinch points in the concertina mechanism.

As a simple selection guide:

  • Choose a fixed-end barrier where the opening is always in the same location and there is a solid fixing point available.
  • Choose a fully mobile barrier where the closure position changes or the barrier needs to move between areas.
  • Choose a linked multi-unit layout with corner posts where the requirement is to enclose or segment a larger area rather than simply close one opening.
