Energy Efficiency Cost Savings
Government guidelines and building regulations, specifically Part L stipulate performance in thermal efficiency for doors. Because all steel doorsets are double skinned steel door leaves with a thickness between 45 - 67mm generally, the space inbetween can be infilled with many different types of material for increasing door panel performance. U values of 1.6 W/m2K for new dwellings and 1.8 W/m2K for commercial buildings can easily be achieved and certified.
Insulated Fire Rated Doors
The drive for net zero and energy efficiency in buildings gives the greatest drive for all external steel doors on buildings to be insulated as standard but this can also apply to fire doors too on a different level. It is obvious that any door fitted to prevent the spread of fire in a building should also be stopping the heat transfer for the fire too. In Europe this has been standard for years. A raging fire on one side of a door that isn't insulated will cause the non fire side to have a glowing red hot panel which will easily cause materials to burn and also seriously injure people near to this door too. Think of the glass on an oven door. That doesn't burn you on the outside when the oven is on full and this should be the case for a fire door too.
EI rated fire doors, which are insulated as well as designed to prevent the spread of flames are becoming more and more common place in the UK now.
The UK & Ireland are the only major European markets where it is NOT mandatory to specify steel personnel doors with both insulation and integrity fire ratings.. That will change one day as it is just common sense they should be.
