Hörmann Decotherm DD Direct Drive Insulated Industrial Roller Shutter

The Hörmann Decotherm DD represents a masterpiece of German engineering, combining exceptional thermal performance with cutting-edge direct drive motor technology. This premium insulated industrial roller shutter door is designed for demanding commercial and industrial applications where thermal efficiency, reliability and advanced automation are paramount.

Unlike conventional single-skin steel roller doors, the Decotherm DD features a unique double-skinned lath profile with PU rigid foam infill, delivering genuine thermal insulation with a heat transmission performance of 3.9 W/m²K. The innovative lath geometry with a minimal thermal bridge represents one of the most thermally efficient roller shutter designs available, significantly reducing energy loss through the door opening.

Direct Drive Motor Technology – The Future of Industrial Doors

The Hörmann direct drive system represents the next generation of industrial door automation, offering significant advantages over traditional chain or tube motor configurations. With fewer moving parts, reduced maintenance requirements and considerably more power, the direct drive motor enables variable speed control, soft start/stop functions and higher daily usage performance ratings.

Key Direct Drive Advantages

  • Powerful Operation: High-performance direct drive operator with absolute encoder (AWG) for precise, reliable door movement
  • Integrated Safety: Position-independent catch safety device prevents the door curtain from falling, even in the event of spring or drive failure
  • Variable Fitting: The motor fitting position can be freely selected during installation (horizontal or downward alignment), with no operator technology visible beneath the barrel in horizontal configuration
  • Reduced Maintenance: Fewer moving components and wear parts extend service life and reduce ongoing maintenance costs
  • Higher Duty Rating: Suitable for intensive-use applications with frequent daily cycles

Optional S6 High-Speed Package

For applications requiring rapid door operation to minimise heat loss and optimise traffic flow, the optional S6 performance package transforms the Decotherm DD into a high-speed door solution. With opening speeds of up to 1.1 metres per second, this package delivers performance approaching that of traditional fabric high-speed doors, but with the superior strength, security and thermal insulation of a steel roller shutter.

The S6 package includes a powerful single-phase frequency converter operator with soft start and soft stop functions, light grilles for enhanced safety in the closing zone, and L-pads on the inside of the curtain to minimise noise and wear. If you are considering a fabric high-speed door for your building, the Decotherm DD with S6 package may offer a more robust, thermally efficient and cost-effective alternative with additional security benefits.

Exceptional Thermal Performance

The Decotherm S lath profile is one of the thickest and most thermally advanced roller shutter laths in its class. The double-skinned steel construction with PU rigid foam infill and optimised geometry create a highly effective thermal barrier, ideal for temperature-controlled environments such as cold stores, food processing facilities, warehouses and manufacturing plants.

The curved outer and inner surfaces ensure excellent winding behaviour and a compact roll diameter, minimising required headroom while maximising thermal efficiency. The lined profile is available with high-quality colour coating to suit any building aesthetic, with the coating applied to both interior and exterior faces.

Compact Design and Minimal Space Requirements

Despite its robust construction and large size capability, the Decotherm DD features remarkably compact fitting dimensions. The narrow aluminium side guides require only 80 mm of sideroom for all door sizes, while the compact support brackets need a maximum of just 180 mm (bearing side) or 280 mm (operator side), even on large door dimensions.

The standard guide channel features polyamide sliding surfaces to reduce wear on the door curtain and ensure smooth, quiet operation. The metal holder can be replaced very easily for inspection and maintenance, supporting long-term serviceability.

Hörmann Quality, Safety and Compliance

Hörmann are globally renowned for their commitment to safety, quality and regulatory compliance. The Decotherm DD roller shutter door exceeds all relevant European standards, including EN 13241-1 for powered industrial doors, ensuring safe operation during all opening and closing phases.

Every door is manufactured in highly specialised German factories using state-of-the-art production technologies and undergoes rigorous testing and quality control. As a made-to-measure roller door suitable for a massive variety of applications, this is a door where quality truly matters and reliability is guaranteed.

Easy Installation and Fitter-Friendly Design

All Decotherm DD components are supplied ready to fit, with no adjustments required on site. The side guides are easily aligned and fitted using a metre line marking system, while the curtain, winding shaft and support brackets are pre-assembled as a complete unit and positioned using support bracket templates. Markings on the side guides enable quick setting of the top end-of-travel position, significantly reducing installation time and costs.

Application

Ideal Applications for the Hörmann Decotherm DD

The Hörmann Decotherm DD represents a premium investment in industrial door technology, and is best suited to applications where thermal efficiency, reliability and intensive daily use are critical business requirements. This is not simply a standard roller shutter – it's a high-performance engineered solution for demanding UK commercial and industrial environments.

Temperature-Controlled Environments

The Decotherm DD excels in applications requiring thermal separation and energy efficiency. Cold stores, chilled distribution centres, food processing facilities and pharmaceutical manufacturing plants all benefit significantly from the door's exceptional U-value of 3.9 W/m²K. The insulated double-skinned lath with PU foam infill creates a genuine thermal barrier that dramatically reduces energy loss compared to single-skin steel doors, delivering measurable cost savings on heating and refrigeration throughout the year.

High-Traffic Logistics and Distribution

For busy loading bays, goods-in/out areas and distribution hubs where the door operates multiple times per hour, the Decotherm DD's direct drive motor technology delivers the robust performance and longevity required. The optional S6 high-speed package (opening at up to 1.1 m/s) further optimises traffic flow and minimises heat loss during frequent door cycles, making it ideal for 24/7 logistics operations where every second of door opening represents energy wastage and operational inefficiency.

Manufacturing and Production Facilities

Industrial manufacturing environments benefit from the Decotherm DD's combination of thermal performance, durability and low maintenance requirements. The direct drive system with fewer moving parts reduces downtime, while the robust steel construction withstands the demands of fork-lift traffic and heavy industrial use. The door's ability to span openings up to 12m wide makes it suitable for large production halls and assembly facilities requiring unobstructed access for oversized machinery and materials.

Where Quality and Reliability are Non-Negotiable

This door is the right choice for businesses where door failure is simply not an option – critical infrastructure, pharmaceutical facilities, data centres with temperature control requirements, or any operation where unplanned downtime carries significant financial or operational consequences. The German-engineered quality, comprehensive safety systems and Hörmann's reputation for reliability make the Decotherm DD a sound long-term investment for mission-critical applications.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Goals

UK businesses facing rising energy costs and increasingly stringent environmental targets will find the Decotherm DD delivers measurable improvements in building thermal performance. The door contributes positively to BREEAM assessments, helps reduce carbon emissions, and can typically deliver return on investment through energy savings within 3-5 years in high-use applications. For organisations committed to net-zero targets, the door is available as a CO₂-neutral product through Hörmann's sustainability programme.

When to Consider Alternative Options

The Decotherm DD represents a premium investment and may be over-specified for low-frequency applications, unheated buildings or where thermal performance is not a priority. For occasional-use agricultural buildings, basic warehouse security or non-temperature-controlled environments, a standard single-skin steel roller shutter may offer a more cost-effective solution. However, where energy efficiency, intensive use and long-term reliability are important, the Decotherm DD delivers exceptional value over its operational lifetime.

Installation

Measuring and Survey Requirements for Hörmann Decotherm DD

Professional Survey Essential

The Hörmann Decotherm DD is a precision-engineered industrial door system that requires professional surveying and installation to ensure optimal performance, safety and compliance with UK regulations. Due to the complexity of the direct drive motor system, thermal performance requirements, and the critical nature of correct installation, we strongly recommend a full site survey is carried out by a qualified Hörmann specialist before ordering.

A professional survey will identify any potential installation challenges, confirm structural suitability, establish exact dimensions, and ensure the correct specification is selected for your specific application and building type.

General Measuring Principles

Standard Internal Face Fitting (Most Common)

When measuring for any roller shutter door, there is a general assumption that the door will be fitted to the inside face of the structural opening. This is certainly the case in most installations, as it maximises the available width and height while positioning the guides and curtain roll out of the way of the actual aperture and protected from external elements.

For internal face fitting, the key dimensions to establish are:

  • Aperture Width: The clear structural opening width
  • Aperture Height: The clear structural opening height from finished floor level to underside of lintel
  • Reveal Depth (Internal Return): The depth available on both sides and at the top for fixing the side guides and support brackets
  • Headroom: The vertical space available above the lintel for the rolled curtain and endplates when the door is fully open
  • Sideroom: The horizontal space available on each side of the opening for the side guides (minimum 80mm for Decotherm DD)

Alternative Fitting Methods

External Face Fitting

The Hörmann Decotherm DD can also be fitted to the outside face of the building opening, typically with an optional hood cover to protect the rolled curtain and operator from weather exposure. This method may be specified where internal headroom or sideroom is restricted, or where the building design requires external mounting.

Reveal Fitting (Between the Opening)

In situations where headroom above the lintel is severely limited, or where a flush finish is required, the door can be installed between the aperture (reveal fit). This versatile fitting option is one of the key advantages of roller shutter door systems, though it may require additional structural work or sub-framing depending on the building construction.

Critical Dimensions and Considerations

Headroom Requirements

The required headroom varies significantly depending on the door height, curtain type, and whether the S6 high-speed package is specified. The Decotherm DD features a relatively compact roll diameter thanks to the optimised winding geometry, but sufficient space must be available for:

  • The rolled curtain when fully open
  • The support brackets and endplates
  • The direct drive motor assembly (variable position)
  • Optional curtain and operator covers
  • Safe clearance for operation and maintenance

Structural Loading and Support

The Decotherm DD, particularly in larger sizes, represents a significant structural load. The building structure must be capable of supporting the weight of the door assembly, motor, and dynamic operating forces. Professional assessment is essential to confirm:

  • Adequate load-bearing capacity of walls, lintels and fixings
  • Suitability of fixing substrate (concrete, steel, brickwork, timber)
  • Any additional steelwork or reinforcement requirements
  • Floor construction suitability for bottom guide and seal fixings

Electrical and Control Requirements

A professional survey will also establish the electrical supply requirements and optimal control panel locations. The direct drive operator typically requires:

  • Suitable 230V or 400V power supply (depending on motor specification)
  • Compliant cable routing and containment
  • Location for control panel and command units at accessible operating height
  • Integration with any building management or fire alarm systems
  • Safety device positioning (photocells, light grilles, warning lights)

Wind Loading and Environmental Assessment

For external installations or exposed locations, wind loading calculations must be performed to ensure the door specification meets the required performance standards. The Decotherm DD is available in wind load classes up to Class 4, but the specific site conditions, building height, exposure and local wind data must be professionally assessed.

Why Professional Installation is Essential

Compliance and Certification

Under UK regulations, powered industrial doors must be installed by competent persons who can issue the required Declaration of Conformity and apply CE/UKCA marking to confirm the complete installation meets the Machinery Directive and relevant safety standards. Hörmann trained installers are fully qualified to fulfill these legal requirements.

Warranty and Support

Professional installation by an authorized Hörmann installer ensures your warranty remains valid and you have access to ongoing technical support, maintenance services and genuine spare parts with guaranteed 10-year availability.

Safety and Performance

Correct installation is critical for safe operation, optimal performance and long service life. The direct drive motor system, safety devices, limit settings and control parameters must all be precisely configured and tested to ensure the door operates safely and reliably from day one.

Measure

When measuring for ANY roller shutter door there is an assumption the door will be fitted to the inside face of the structural opening, which is certainly the case in most installatons for maximising width and height, placing the guides and the curtain roll out of the way of the actual aperture.

The width and height of the aperture is the measurement to focus on and then add in the width and height of the inside return and the headroom above the lintel available.

A roller shutter door can be fitted to the inside face as well as the outside face (with a hood cover) but also inbetween the aperture if there isnt any available headroom or sideroom. It is one of the most verstile types of door available in this respect,
