Description

Samson SRD77 Insulated Electric Roller Door – Button & Key Switch Control

Simple, compliant electric operation

The Samson SRD77 with external key switch control is a double‑skinned, insulated aluminium roller garage door designed for straightforward, reliable electric operation from both inside and outside the garage. It keeps controls simple, remains fully compliant with UK safety regulations for powered doors, and is ideal where the garage is mainly accessed on foot rather than used for daily vehicle parking.

Internal button control for everyday use

Inside the garage, a neat wall‑mounted Up/Down button panel gives you direct control to raise and lower the door. You do not need remote controls, batteries or complex programming, just clear, hard‑wired buttons that are easy to understand and use.

The system uses hold‑to‑run logic as standard: you press and hold the button until the door is fully open or fully closed, and you can stop the door at any point during travel. Because you are in control of the movement at all times, the door can operate without additional electronic safety systems such as infra‑red beams or bottom‑edge safety sensors, while still meeting UK requirements.

External key switch for secure outside access

For access from outside the garage, the SRD77 is supplied with a robust external security key switch. This allows you to operate the door using a key, turning and holding to move the door in the same way as the internal button.

Both the internal button and external key switch are hard‑wired, giving a dependable, tamper‑resistant solution with no reliance on radio signals or handsets. This setup is ideal for users who want secure external control without the added cost and complexity of full remote‑control systems.

Genesis control panel and semi‑automatic opening

The Genesis wall‑mounted control panel is supplied as part of this SRD77 configuration and includes integrated Up and Down buttons for internal operation. Using this control panel, you can configure the door to run in a semi‑automatic mode:

  • SRD77 Slat ProfileIn the opening direction, a brief “impulse” from the button or key can be set to open the door fully after you release it.
  • In the closing direction, the system retains hold‑to‑run operation, so you must keep the button pressed or key turned while the door closes, maintaining compliance with UK safety regulations.

This combination gives you convenient, one‑touch opening while keeping closing control deliberately manual and supervised.

UK‑manufactured quality and sizing

Samson SRD77 insulated roller doors are manufactured in the UK for Samson Doors, using many years of roller door experience to deliver high‑quality materials, precise assembly and consistent performance. The design focuses on what most homeowners actually need: insulation, reliability and simple, intuitive controls.

Doors are made to measure up to a maximum overall width of 5200 mm (including the side guides). The maximum curtain height is 2900 mm, plus 300 mm for the roll and endplates above. Side channel guides are 70 mm or 90 mm wide depending on the door width ordered; doors over 3000 mm wide always use 90 mm guides, so the clear opening width is 180 mm less than the ordering width.

Colours, hoods and visual options

The SRD77 curtain is available in 3 standard and 8 premium powder‑coated colour finishes, allowing you to match or complement your home’s exterior. Optional half or full hood in a matching colour is available to protect and neatly conceal the roll.

If you prefer a contrasting colour for the hood or guides – for example to match windows or front doors – Samson Doors can provide details and pricing, helping you create a tailored appearance while keeping all the benefits of an insulated, compact roller design.

Manual override and emergency access

An internal manual winding handle system is fitted as standard so you can operate the door from inside in the event of a power failure. If you do not have a separate pedestrian access to your garage, we strongly recommend adding an external low‑level manual release alongside the external key switch, so you can still gain entry during a power cut.

Why choose this SRD77 control option?

With internal button control, a secure external key switch and configurable semi‑automatic opening, this Samson SRD77 variant is ideal when you want reliable, everyday access from both inside and outside – without paying for remote controls you may never use. It combines UK‑made quality, simple wiring and user‑friendly operation in a practical insulated roller door package.

Application

You require a separate access to your garage to operate this door with the internal only button control. Internal emergency manual override is also fitted as standard and only accessed from inside the garage on the same side as the motor drive which you can specify when ordering.

Specification

  • External security key switch, hard‑wired back to the internal control panel, for secure operation from outside the garage.
  • Genesis internal control panel with built‑in Up and Down buttons, providing centralised, easy‑to‑use control and allowing semi‑automatic opening logic to be configured.

Installation

Installation Guidance – Samson SRD77 Button & Key Switch Control

The Samson SRD77 Button & Key Switch Control is designed for straightforward installation, with factory‑prepared components, minimal electronics and clear fixing points. It can be fitted behind, inbetween or (with suitable hooding and sealing) in front of the structural opening, depending on space and preferred finish.

Pre‑installation checks

  • Confirm the opening is reasonably square and plumb, with a solid fixing surface (brick, block, steel or suitable timber).
  • Check that you have the correct motor side handing as specified on your order.
  • Ensure there is sufficient headroom for the 300 mm roll and endplates, and adequate side room for the guides (70 mm or 90 mm each side).
  • Arrange a suitable 230–240 V single‑phase power supply, installed by a competent person in line with current UK regulations.

Positioning guides and roll

  1. Marking out
Measure the structural opening and compare with the ordering sizes. Mark the finished door position and the centreline of the opening on the inside face, then mark the guide positions to ensure they will be plumb and parallel.
  2. Fixing the side guides
Offer up each aluminium guide, check with a spirit level that it is perfectly vertical, then fix through the pre‑drilled holes using appropriate fixings for the wall type. Do not overtighten; keep the guides straight and parallel from top to bottom.
  3. Setting the roll and endplates
Lift the pre‑assembled roll and endplate unit into position above the opening, locating the endplates on the tops of the guides. Align so the curtain will run centrally in the guides, then fix the endplates securely back to the wall or supporting structure, ensuring they are level and the roll has sufficient clearance.

Electrical connection and control setup

  1. Power supply
Bring the dedicated power supply to a suitable isolator close to the motor side. Route cables neatly, avoiding sharp edges, moving parts and potential water ingress.
  2. Wiring the motor, button and key switch
Connect the tube motor to the Genesis control panel as per the wiring diagram supplied with the door. Wire the internal button/rocker switch into the control panel using the specified control cable, then hard‑wire the external key switch back to the same panel for secure outside operation.
  3. Initial test
With the curtain in the open position and the manual override disengaged, energise the system and test Up and Down using “hold‑to‑run” operation from both the internal button and external key switch. Confirm the motor runs smoothly and in the correct direction before proceeding.

Setting limits and commissioning

  1. Limit setting
Use the motor’s limit‑setting method (mechanical or electronic, depending on model) to define the fully open and fully closed positions. The lower limit should close the curtain snugly to the floor without excessive load; the upper limit should stop before the curtain overwinds or fouls the motor fixings.
  2. Operational checks
Run the door through several full open/close cycles, operating it from both the internal button and the external key switch. Check that it travels smoothly, remains centred in the guides and does not rub or bind. Make fine adjustments to guides or limits as required.
  3. Manual override test
Engage the internal manual winding system and confirm that the door can be opened and closed smoothly by hand. Disengage the override and re‑test powered operation.
  4. Configuring semi‑automatic opening (if required)
Using the Genesis control panel, set the door so that in the opening direction an impulse from the button or key will open the door fully, while the closing direction remains hold‑to‑run to comply with UK safety requirements.

Hoods, sealing and finishing

  1. Fitting half or full hood (if specified)
Position the hood sections over the roll and fix to the endplates and any support brackets as directed in the supplied instructions. Ensure the hood is secure and does not interfere with the curtain path.
  2. Weather sealing
Seal gaps between guides, endplates and the wall with a suitable external‑grade sealant to improve weather protection. Check the floor line and consider a threshold seal if there are uneven areas or small gaps.
  3. Final presentation
Check all fixings, cable runs and covers. Clean down the curtain, guides and hood, removing any labels or protective films as appropriate.

User handover and safety notes

  • Explain “hold‑to‑run” operation and emphasise that the user must keep the door in sight while it is moving, whether using the internal button or the external key switch.
  • Demonstrate the internal manual override and, if fitted, any low‑level external manual release, and confirm the location of the mains isolator.
  • Advise against boxing in the guides, hood, motor or key switch cabling so that future maintenance and adjustment remain accessible.
  • Remind the user that any further electrical changes should be carried out by a suitably qualified person.

When these steps are followed, the Samson SRD77 Button & Key Switch Control provides a clean, tidy installation with very little setup time, offering practical, secure access from both inside and outside the garage.

Measure

Measuring and Ordering Guidance

Ordering sizes for this Samson roller garage door are based on the Over Guide Width (OGW) and Guide Height (GH) only – they do not include the endplates or the curtain roll (see 3D diagram below for reference).

  • Guides are 75 mm wide on each side for doors up to 3000 mm wide.
  • For doors over 3000 mm wide, the guides are 90 mm wide on each side.

For a standard behind‑fit installation:

  • Clear Opening Width
Up to 3000 mm wide: Clear Opening Width = Ordering Width − 150 mm
Over 3000 mm and up to 5200 mm: Clear Opening Width = Ordering Width − 180 mm
  • Clear Opening Height
Clear Opening Height = Guide Height − 50 mm (allowing for the bottom slat sitting down into the guides).
The 300 mm endplates, which contain the motor and barrel, are added on top of the Guide Height to give the Overall Height required.

For inbetween‑fit (between reveal) installations:

Please contact us for specific sizing advice. You will need a half hood or full hood when fitting inbetween and underneath the lintel, and you should allow suitable fitting tolerances within your ordering dimensions.
