Samson Xpanda SaftiWindow Double Sash Grille
Overview
The Samson Xpanda SaftiWindow double sash grille provides a highly effective visual and physical deterrent against traditional break-in methods across wider window openings. Supplied directly off the shelf for a quick turnaround, these expanding steel grilles are designed strictly for internal use. They offer a practical solution for both commercial and domestic spaces where reliable daily security and a neat visual appearance are equally important.
How the double sash operates
Unlike the single sash version, this model uses two separate steel grilles that pull together and secure in the centre of your window opening. When unlocked, the individual sashes retract smoothly to opposite sides to maximise natural light. The design is completely trackless. Because there are no top or bottom tracks to install or maintain, the grilles do not have to fit your window dimensions exactly to function properly, giving you excellent flexibility across different aperture shapes.
Locking and components
The pricing for this system includes both sashes, alongside an XP4 lock and accessory pack. This central locking system joins the two grilles securely together when closed, forming a rigid steel barrier across the glass. Fitting the system is straightforward because you only need to secure the fixed vertical hinge channels to either side of the wall reveal. The two grilles simply hang from these side points and expand towards the middle when required.
Sizes and ordering
The double sash format easily accommodates larger window apertures that a standard single grille cannot cover. When placing your order, the overall width you select dictates the total span of the two units combined. For example, ordering an 1800 mm wide by 2000 mm high system means you will receive two individual sashes, each designed to cover 900 mm wide by 2000 mm high. This split design keeps the physical weight manageable during installation and ensures the stacked steel lattice sits in a balanced way on both sides of the window.
Ventilation and security during warmer months
Safe airflow on hot days
During the peak of summer, maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures often means leaving windows wide open. However, this creates a major vulnerability, especially for ground floor or easily accessible domestic and commercial spaces. The SaftiWindow grille solves this by allowing you to throw your windows open for essential cross ventilation while providing a formidable physical barrier against opportunistic thieves. The steel expanding lattice lets the breeze through unrestricted, so you can safely ventilate bedrooms at night or keep a busy office cool without compromising on security.
A highly effective visual deterrent
Beyond the physical strength of the steel structure, the SaftiWindow acts as a very clear, immediate warning to anyone sizing up your property. Burglars typically look for the path of least resistance. When a building is left unoccupied, whether it is an office shut down for the weekend or a home empty during a summer holiday, the visible presence of a heavy-duty locked grille behind the glass signals that the property is protected. This psychological deterrent is often enough to make intruders move on to an easier target, stopping the break-in before they even attempt to smash the glass.
Practical applications for the SaftiWindow grille
Ground floor domestic windows
Ground floor windows at the rear or side of a house are common targets for forced entry. The SaftiWindow provides an immediate physical barrier. Because the sash folds tightly away and swings entirely clear on its side hinges, it does not permanently block your view of the garden or obstruct emergency escape routes. You get the security when you are out or asleep. But daytime natural light levels remain largely unaffected. This makes the grille highly practical for patio side windows, utility rooms, and ground-floor home offices containing expensive IT equipment.
Commercial offices and rear elevations
Businesses often have vulnerable glass elevations backing onto alleys, industrial estates or unlit car parks. Installing fixed burglar bars can feel oppressive for staff working inside all day. A trackless retractable sash solves this completely. The steel grille stays pushed back out of sight during office hours. The slam lock mechanism then makes securing the building fast when the last person leaves for the night. And it avoids the need for heavy external roller shutters which often require formal planning permission or negatively alter the building exterior.
Retail spaces and shop window displays
Shop windows need to promote stock even when the premises are locked up. The expanding lattice pattern of the Xpanda system stops intruders from reaching through broken glass. Potential customers can still clearly see the products illuminated behind the steel framework. It works exceptionally well for independent retailers, pharmacies, and electronics shops needing a cost-effective internal deterrent without having to install metal tracks permanently across their main window display base.
Serveries, reception desks and internal hatches
Trackless grilles are frequently used indoors to control access between rooms. A single sash grille can secure a school canteen servery, a public clinic reception counter, or an internal office hatch. Because there is no bottom track required, the counter surface remains entirely clear for sliding paperwork or trays across during the day. You simply pull the grille across the opening and push the lock closed to shut off the secure area while leaving the wider building open. It is a very simple division method.
Technical specifications
Sash configuration and sizing
The double sash system is supplied as two separate grilles designed to cover wider window openings. When you order, the size you select reflects the total overall width required. This is then split equally. For instance, an 1800 mm wide system arrives as two individual 900 mm sashes. Because the grilles are completely trackless, they do not need to match the window dimensions down to the exact millimetre to function properly. This gives you valuable built-in tolerance during installation.
Core materials and finish
Manufactured from tubular cold-rolled steel, the expanding lattice provides a highly rigid physical barrier. It is set into 38 mm steel "U" channels on the fixed outer sides. The entire system is finished in a durable white epoxy powder coat as standard. Please note this specific trackless window model is rated for internal use only, designed to sit behind the glass to protect the interior of the property.
Central locking system
Instead of locking into a wall receiver like a single sash model, the two halves of this grille meet in the centre of the window. The system includes an XP4 lock and accessory pack. This mechanism joins and secures the leading edges of both sashes together tightly, forming a continuous defensive line across the opening.
Mounting and operation
Fitting is straightforward. You only need to secure the two fixed vertical channels to the left and right sides of the window reveal or surrounding wall. There are no top or bottom tracks to cut, align or trip over. Once fixed, the sashes hinge from the sides and glide toward the middle. On wider configurations, leading edge castor wheels support the weight of the steel to ensure the grilles extend smoothly without sagging over the internal window board or counter.

Installing the double sash grille
Initial preparation and alignment
The double sash SaftiWindow is trackless, which keeps installation relatively straightforward as you only need to secure the side framing. Start by offering up one of the hinged vertical channels to the left side of your window reveal or face-fit surface. Use a spirit level to ensure the post is perfectly plumb. If the post is not completely vertical, the sash will not pull straight across the opening. Mark your fixing holes through the pre-drilled points in the channel, drill them out, and secure the post using appropriate screws and rawlplugs for your wall type.
Securing the second sash
Once the left-hand sash is securely fixed to the wall, move to the right-hand side. Position the second vertical channel on the opposite wall. Before drilling any holes, it is crucial to extend both grilles toward the centre of the window to ensure the locking mechanisms line up perfectly where they meet. Once you are satisfied the central XP4 lock engages smoothly, mark the fixing points for the right-hand post, drill, and secure it into place.
Testing the central lock and movement
With both side channels firmly attached to the wall, pull the two sashes together into the middle of the window. Test the central lock to make sure the key turns smoothly and the pins drop into place without needing to force the steel lattice. If you find the sashes are tight or misaligned, you may need to loosen the fixings slightly on one side and pack behind the vertical channel to square it up. Finally, check that the leading-edge castor wheels (if supplied on wider sashes) run cleanly across the window cill as you push the grilles back to their stacked, open positions.
Warranty and product guarantees
Manufacturer warranty periods
The Samson Xpanda SaftiWindow range is supplied with a comprehensive 2-year manufacturer warranty covering both materials and workmanship. This guarantee gives you peace of mind that the product is built to last and function smoothly under normal daily conditions.
What the warranty covers
The standard warranty covers the core components of your grille, including the powder-coated steel lattice, the side hinges, and the built-in slam lock mechanism. If these parts fail due to a manufacturing defect within the warranty period, they will be covered under the terms of the guarantee. The warranty remains valid for both internal and external fitments, provided the grille is installed correctly according to the supplied instructions.
Maintenance and conditions
To ensure your warranty remains valid, you must follow the basic cleaning and maintenance instructions for the product. This simply involves keeping the expanding lattice free of heavy dust and debris, periodically wiping down the powder-coated finish, and ensuring the lock and hinges are kept clean so they operate without forced resistance. The warranty does not cover accidental damage, improper use, unauthorized alterations, or general fair wear and tear over time.
