Trellidor ShutterView® S1 LPS 1175 SR1 Certified Made to Measure Aluminium Security Shutters

This product introduces a very new concept to the UK market. Historically, plantation shutters have been sold purely for the convenience of what internal blinds offer. The general products available across the UK are typically manufactured from flimsy timber or plastic materials. While they might be aesthetically pleasing, they offer absolutely no strength at all for security and lack genuine longevity. If security is the main reason you started looking at plantation shutters, or if it is the reason you ended up here after looking at roller shutters and grilles, the ShutterView® S1 answers the question properly.

It is the only plantation shutter available in the UK that is independently tested and certified to LPS 1175 Security Rating 1 (SR1) by the Loss Prevention Certification Board. Not claimed. Not implied. It is independently tested on a finished assembly by LPCB, the leading certification body for physical security products in the UK, and listed as a result of passing that test. That certification separates it from every other flimsy plantation shutter on the market, putting it in the same verified conversation as security roller shutters and industrial grilles that carry the exact same rating.

Crucially, it provides this formidable strength while remaining a fully functional louvre shutter. Light, privacy, air flow, and general climate control all still work perfectly, making it an exceptional alternative to curtains or internal blinds. It just happens to also be a certified security barrier.

What LPS 1175 SR1 Actually Means

LPS 1175 is the Loss Prevention Standard published and administered by the Loss Prevention Certification Board, a BRE Global body. It is the most widely cited independent physical security standard in the UK and covers intruder resistant building components, barriers, enclosures, doors, shutters, and grilles. The testing is conducted on a finished, locked product assembly, not on materials or individual components in isolation. That matters because it means the rating reflects how the product actually performs in use.

Security ratings run from SR1 upwards. SR1 is the entry point into certified security. The test involves an opportunist attack using Category A tools, which are easily concealed, handheld implements including screwdrivers, levers, pliers, knives, cable cutters, wedges, and similar. The product must withstand a minimum of one minute of active attack time within a ten minute total test window without allowing access. An opportunist attack is broadly defined as someone who expects the target to be undefended or lightly protected and will abandon the attempt if it is not quick.

That profile describes the vast majority of residential burglaries in the UK. Most break ins are not carried out by determined professionals with power tools and an hour to work. They are opportunist. Fast, noisy entry through the most vulnerable point available is the norm, and if it does not give way quickly, the attempt is abandoned. SR1 is calibrated precisely for that threat level. It is the perfect certification for a residential security product, and the ShutterView® S1 carries it.

Why Certification Matters More Than Claims

The UK plantation shutter market is full of products described as secure or strong. However, whether they are timber, PVC, or basic aluminium, almost none of them have independent verification. A manufacturer describing a product as secure costs nothing and means nothing without a test result from a recognised body to back it up.

LPS 1175 certification from LPCB is not a marketing sticker. It requires the product to be submitted to independent physical attack testing and to pass that testing before any certification is awarded. Products are listed on the LPCB database, and certification is tied to the specific product specification, meaning it cannot simply be applied to a different model or configuration.

The ShutterView® S1 is the only plantation shutter in the UK that has been through this rigorous process and holds a current SR1 listing. As a buyer, that gives you something concrete to compare against the broader market. Every other flimsy timber or plastic plantation shutter you will be quoted for has no equivalent independent verification of its resistance to forced entry.

The Construction Behind the Rating and Longevity

The S1 builds on the full ShutterView® range specification, including a full architectural grade aluminium frame, 93mm S shaped double walled louvres, patented louvre indexing, woolpile sealing strips, and colour matched aluminium hinges. It then adds the structural upgrades required to achieve SR1 certification.

Each louvre is reinforced with an internal threaded steel rod running its full length. The lock and frame assembly are engineered and tested as a complete system to the LPS 1175 SR1 standard. The locking is multipoint and height dependent, and the whole assembly, including how the frame sits in the opening and how the panels interact under load, has been tested as a finished installation.

Because it is constructed entirely from architectural grade aluminium and steel, it boasts incredible longevity. Unlike timber or plastic, it will not warp, crack, fade, or degrade over time. Trellidor has been manufacturing security barriers since 1976 and holds ISO 9001:2025 certification through LPCB. The ShutterView® S1 is not a plantation shutter that has had a lock added to it as an afterthought. It is a purpose built security product that functions beautifully as a plantation shutter.

An Alternative to Curtains and Internal Blinds

Certification does not reduce the functionality of the shutter. The S1 is a complete alternative to curtains or internal blinds, retaining all the practical climate control benefits that make plantation shutters genuinely useful in a UK home.

Light control — louvres tilt in unison via the patented indexing wheel, from fully open to fully closed. Partial angles diffuse direct sunlight without darkening the room. South facing and west facing rooms with large windows benefit from this considerably during summer afternoons, where the alternative is either full glare or drawn curtains.

Privacy — with louvres tilted downward, a room is private from street level without blocking light or air. Fully closed, it gives complete privacy. The optional Louvre Latch holds the louvres in a set position for additional security against louvre movement when closed.

Air flow — a partially open louvre creates a directed air flow through the opening in a similar way to a louvred vent. In summer, this allows a ground floor window to remain open to ventilation with the shutter locked, giving air flow without the security risk an open, unprotected window creates. That particular combination of ventilation and security simultaneously is something a roller shutter, a standard blind, or curtains cannot offer at all.

Heat and climate management — closed louvres reduce draughts through glazed openings in winter. In rooms with large areas of glass, or bifold systems that are cold sided, this makes a measurable difference to comfort without resorting to secondary glazing or heavy curtains.

On any window that faces a street, a public path, or a shared boundary, the S1 handles everything a fabric window treatment does while adding a formidable security function in a single permanent fitting. It will not fade, will not accumulate moisture, and will not need replacing on a domestic decoration cycle.

The Right Product for Most Homeowners

People who arrive at this product generally start in one of two places. Either they have been looking at roller shutters or grilles and want something that provides verified protection without closing the room off visually. Or they have been looking at plantation shutters and realised that the standard UK options, whether flimsy timber, plastic PVC, or uncertified aluminium, do not actually address the security or longevity question at all.

The ShutterView® S1 is the answer to both starting points. For the homeowner who wants genuine, certified residential security, it delivers SR1 performance, the same independently tested rating carried by security roller shutters used in commercial settings. But it also acts as a superior alternative to curtains and blinds. It lets light in, manages heat, controls privacy, allows ventilation, and looks like a considered interior design choice rather than a defensive installation.

No other plantation shutter in the UK offers that combination of climate control, longevity, and independent certification. This is Samson Doors flagship shutter product, and in the context of what is available in the UK market, there is genuinely nothing else like it.

Aluminium Versus Timber: Lifespan and Maintenance

While traditional timber shutters offer a classic aesthetic, they require significant ongoing upkeep and degrade naturally over time. The architectural grade aluminium used in the ShutterView® S1 provides a permanent and low maintenance solution designed to last for decades.

Feature ShutterView® S1 Aluminium Traditional Timber Shutters
Material Lifespan Highly durable and immune to moisture. It will not warp, rot, or swell, making it perfect for damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Prone to warping, swelling, and cracking when exposed to changing temperatures, condensation, or humidity.
Finish Durability Features a UV resistant powder coated finish that will not fade, blister, or peel in direct sunlight. Painted or stained finishes fade over time and require regular sanding and repainting to maintain their appearance.
Routine Maintenance Incredibly easy to clean. It requires only a quick wipe with a damp cloth because the smooth metal surface naturally repels dirt. Dust clings easily to painted wood. Cleaning must be done carefully to avoid water damage, which adds to the overall upkeep effort.
Structural Integrity The internal steel rod and robust metal frame maintain their certified security strength and shape indefinitely. Timber joints weaken over time, and the wood becomes brittle or soft, offering zero credible security or resistance to force.
