Trellidor ShutterView® TX - Made to Measure Aluminium Plantation Shutters

Most plantation shutters sold in the UK are either wood or plastic. They look the part but offer very little in the way of genuine security, and they do nothing that a decent blind could not also do. The Trellidor ShutterView® TX is a different proposition entirely. Built from double walled aluminium throughout and manufactured to the exact dimensions of your door, window, or opening, it works as a proper shutter, controlling light, heat, airflow, and privacy, while carrying a level of security that puts it firmly in the same conversation as a security grille or roller shutter.

That combination is genuinely unusual in the UK residential market. And for many homes, it removes the need for a separate security product altogether.

What the ShutterView® TX Is

The ShutterView® TX is the entry model in the Trellidor louvre shutter range, though "entry" here means entry into a category that standard plantation shutters do not come close to touching. Every unit is custom made to your opening. There are no standard off the shelf sizes and no adapting panels to fit. The frame is full architectural grade aluminium, and the louvres themselves are 93mm wide, double walled, and formed in Trellidor's distinctive S shaped profile, a shape that closes snugly and handles water runoff cleanly, which matters if you are fitting shutters to a door that opens outward or to an alfresco space.

Each louvre carries a woolpile sealing strip, which runs along its edge to tighten the closure and improve weather performance as well as light exclusion. It is a small detail that makes a tangible difference when the shutters are fully closed as there is no finish with gaps that you tend to get with cheaper alternatives.

The locking system is a multipoint arrangement (the number of points scales with the height of the shutter), operated by a strong lock that has been extensively attack tested to Trellidor's own security standards. The ShutterView® TX carries a medium strength rating, which is solid for a home with peripheral security measures already in place.

Security That Works Without Looking Like Security

Most homeowners who want genuine window or door security end up choosing between a roller shutter or a traditional grille. Both work, but neither is particularly pleasant to live with inside the house. Roller shutters close off natural light entirely. Grilles are functional and robust, but they look institutional.

The ShutterView® TX does what neither of those products can: it secures the opening while remaining a considered interior fitting. With the louvres tilted open, the shutter is largely transparent. Light comes through, air moves freely, and from the street or garden the shutter reads as a design feature rather than a defensive measure. Close the louvres and you have a solid, locked barrier. The frame is fully framed for strength, the lock engages at multiple points, and the whole assembly has been attack tested against the standards Trellidor applies across its security product range.

Trellidor has been making security products since 1976, and the ShutterView® TX is not a decorative product that has been given a lock as an afterthought. The security function is built into the specification from the outset.

Light and Privacy Control

The patented louvre indexing system is the mechanism that sets these shutters apart from basic louvre designs. An inbuilt indexing wheel ensures every louvre in the panel tilts to exactly the same angle simultaneously. There is no fiddling with individual blades to get an even result as one movement positions all of them together.

The louvres can be tilted by hand to any angle between fully open and fully closed, which gives you a range of results:

  • Fully open: maximum light and airflow, open sightlines
  • Partially tilted: diffused light, reduced direct glare, maintained airflow
  • Fully closed: near complete privacy and light exclusion

Unique side locks on the louvre mechanism reduce friction throughout the travel, keeping the action smooth even on taller units with more louvre weight to manage. You can also specify a split configuration connecting louvres divided into upper and lower sections that can be positioned independently. That is particularly useful where you want to admit light from above while maintaining privacy at eye level from outside.

An optional Louvre Latch is available as an accessory for additional privacy when the shutters are closed.

Heat, Airflow, and Climate Control

The UK is not a climate that traditionally demands much thought about solar heat gain or ventilation control. But it is worth considering what plantation shutters actually do in this context, particularly given how many homes now have larger glazed openings, bifold door systems, or garden rooms where temperature management is a genuine issue.

When the ShutterView® TX louvres are set at a partial angle, they act in a similar way to a louvred vent, directing airflow through the opening rather than blocking it. In summer, this means you can maintain ventilation through a ground floor window without compromising visibility or security in the way an open window would. In winter, closed louvres reduce the draught factor through glazed openings and help retain heat in rooms with large areas of glass.

As an alternative to curtains or blinds on windows that face a public street, the shutters provide all of the same light and privacy management plus the added structural benefit of the aluminium frame. They will not absorb moisture, will not fade in the sun, and will not need replacing every few years the way fabric treatments do.

Where They Can Be Fitted

The ShutterView® TX is available in five operating configurations, each suited to a different type of opening:

  • Hinged: single or double, suitable for standard windows and outward opening doors
  • Bifold: stacks neatly to one or both sides; good for wider openings where full clearance is needed
  • French: two panel configuration for French doors or paired windows
  • Slider: panels slide horizontally; useful where the opening depth allows for a track system
  • Fixed: panels that do not open; for openings where ventilation is not required but security and light control are

The final configuration for any installation is determined by the site dimensions and any restrictions imposed by the frame or surrounding structure. Because each unit is made to measure, there is a reasonable degree of flexibility in terms of what can be accommodated.

Construction and Specification

All louvres are fully framed within the outer frame, which prevents individual blades from being levered or displaced independently. The hinges are colour matched aluminium. This is not an obvious detail, but it is one that contributes to the clean finish that distinguishes these from budget shutters.

No power supply is required. The ShutterView® TX is entirely mechanical, which means no motor to fail, no control system to update, and no dependency on electricity for basic operation.

Standard specification at a glance:

  • Louvre material: Double walled aluminium, S shaped profile
  • Louvre width: 93mm
  • Frame: Full architectural grade aluminium
  • Locking: Multipoint (number of points height dependent), nylon shootbolt pin
  • Hinges: Colour matched aluminium
  • Louvre sealing: Woolpile strip on each louvre
  • Strength rating: Medium
  • Material and louvre warranty: 5 years
  • Component hardware warranty: 3 years

How It Compares to Other UK Plantation Shutters

Standard UK plantation shutters, whether timber or PVC, are interior window dressings. They are not designed to resist attack, the frames are comparatively lightweight, and their locking systems (where they exist at all) are basic. For a homeowner who simply wants a decorative shutter effect, they are adequate. But they offer no meaningful security benefit.

The ShutterView® TX is a different class of product. Double walled aluminium construction, a tested locking system, a fully framed louvre assembly, and the Trellidor manufacturer pedigree in security barriers put this combination well above anything comparable currently available in the UK plantation shutter market. It is not the most security focused product in the ShutterView® range (the Classic model steps that up further with an internal threaded steel rod in each louvre), but it does far more than any wooden or plastic shutter can claim to.

For the right application, such as a ground floor room, a door with glazed panels, a utility space or annexe, or anywhere that currently has curtains or blinds on a window that faces a public area, the ShutterView® TX resolves several problems at once. It is one product, made to fit, that handles security, light, heat, privacy, and airflow without looking like any of those things are its purpose.
