SeceuroShield 38 Manual | Extruded Aluminium Spring-Assisted Shutter

The SeceuroShield 38 is the best-selling security shutter in the SWS range, widely regarded as the ultimate all-rounder for domestic and commercial applications. Combining a compact design with the superior strength of extruded aluminium, this manual shutter offers a significant security upgrade over foam-filled alternatives without the bulk of industrial steel roller doors.

This model features a spring-assisted push-up/pull-down mechanism, making it the perfect choice for locations where electric power is unavailable or unnecessary. The internal spring counterbalance neutralises the weight of the curtain, allowing for smooth, effortless operation by hand.

Double-Skinned Extruded Strength

Unlike the lighter SeceuroShield 150 (which uses foam-filled slats), the SeceuroShield 38 features a double-walled extruded aluminium profile. This manufacturing process creates a curtain that is:

  • Significantly Stronger: The extrusion process produces a dense, rigid metal slat that offers higher resistance to impact and forced entry.
  • Durably Constructed: With a nominal height of 38mm and a thickness of 9mm, the slat is robust enough for shopfronts yet elegant enough for residential windows.
  • Weather Resistant: The high-quality finish and rust-free aluminium construction ensure longevity even in harsh external environments.

Spring Assisted Operation & Locking

Designed for reliability and ease of use, the spring-assisted operation is ideal for doorways, serveries, and kiosks where quick access is required.

Effortless Lifting

A high-tension counterbalance spring is concealed within the shutter axle. This spring does the heavy lifting for you, meaning the shutter can be raised or lowered to any position with minimal physical effort. There are no cranks to wind or cords to pull—simply lift the handle on the bottom slat.

Secure Locking System

Security is integral to this manual specification. The shutter is secured by a robust key lock positioned centrally in the reinforced bottom slat. When the key is turned, steel locking bars extend from the bottom slat directly into the guide rails on either side, physically anchoring the curtain in the closed position.

Compact & Aesthetic Design

The defining feature of the SeceuroShield 38 is its ability to roll into a very small enclosure. Because the 38mm slat curves tightly, the shutter box is often smaller than competing products for the same height opening. This preserves the look of your property and maximizes the clear opening height.

  • Full Box Enclosure: Supplied as standard with a full aluminium hood cover (chamfered at 45° for style) to protect the mechanism and curtain.
  • Colour Options: Available in stock colours of White, Brown, Black, and Cream, with the option to powder coat to any RAL or BS colour to match your frames or branding.
Application

The SeceuroShield 38 Spring Assisted manual shutter is a versatile security solution, favoured for its balance of strength, compact aesthetics, and simple operation. Its reliable locking mechanism and lack of electrical requirements make it ideal for a wide range of commercial and domestic settings.

Primary Uses

  • Doorways & Entrances: Perfect for securing back doors, staff entrances, and office doors where quick manual access is required without relying on power.
  • Bars & Serveries: The go-to choice for countertops in pubs, clubs, and canteens. The spring balance allows staff to easily lift the shutter for service and pull it down to lock up securely at closing time.
  • Kiosks & Ticket Booths: Provides a secure, lockable barrier for standalone retail pods and ticket windows in transport hubs or stadiums.
  • Reception Desks: Secures expensive equipment and confidential files behind reception counters in medical centres, offices, and schools out of hours.
  • Display Cabinets: Offers a neat, unobtrusive security layer for high-value merchandise displays in retail environments.
  • Residential Windows: The compact box size makes it suitable for ground-floor home windows requiring extra protection against break-ins.

Key Benefits for these Applications

  • No Power Needed: Can be installed anywhere, regardless of proximity to mains electricity.
  • Space Saving: The tight roll of the 38mm slat minimizes the box size, preserving headroom over counters and doorways.
  • User Friendly: The counterbalance spring makes daily operation light and manageable for all staff members.

Size Limitations (Spring Assisted)

The SeceuroShield 38 Spring Assisted model is designed for optimal performance within specific size ranges to ensure ease of operation and structural integrity.

  • Minimum Width: 500mm
  • Maximum Width: 4000mm
  • Maximum Height: 2800mm
  • Maximum Area: 7m² (for Manual Spring Assisted)

Operation Method

Spring Loaded / Hand Assisted

This model features a counterbalance spring housed within the axle, neutralizing the curtain weight for smooth, effortless manual operation. It is specifically designed for external operation on exit doors or internal use on counters and kiosks.

  • Mechanism: Push-up / Pull-down operation via handles on the bottom slat.
  • Locking: Secured by a transverse key lock located centrally in the bottom slat. Turning the key engages steel locking bars into the guide rails.
  • Obstruction Note: Please note that the bottom slat (containing the lock and handles) will hang down approximately 50-60mm from the box when fully raised. Ensure this does not obstruct outward-opening doors or pass-through hatches.

Note: While electric and crank options exist for the 38 profile generally, this specific product listing is for the Spring Assisted manual version only.

Guide Rails

The shutter is supplied with high-quality extruded aluminium guide rails, reinforced for security and fitted with brush seals for quiet operation.

  • Standard: H30 Guides (Standard security, suitable for most applications).
  • High Security (Optional): H40/S Guides (Provide additional resistance against forced attack; recommended for higher risk areas).
  • Wind Locks: When H40/S guides are selected, wind end locks will be fitted to the curtain slats as standard to prevent the curtain from being forced out of the guides.
  • Compact Options: H17 and H25 guides are available on request for very tight spaces (Note: H17 is strictly for internal use only).

Bottom Slat & Locking Upgrade

New Slimline Bottom Slat Lock

All manual SeceuroShield 38 shutters are now manufactured with an upgraded, high-quality bottom slat lock.

  • Slim Profile: At just 6mm thick, this new lock is significantly slimmer than previous models, offering a flush, neat fit within the commercial bottom rail.
  • Smoother Action: Engineered for a smoother turning operation, reducing key resistance.
  • Retro-Fit: The lock design allows for easy retro-fitting onto existing compatible products if maintenance is required in the future.

Installation

Installation Overview

Comprehensive installation instructions are provided with every SeceuroShield 38 shutter order. The 38mm extruded aluminium slat profile offers a robust yet relatively lightweight system, allowing for easier handling compared to larger steel shutters. A "Built-On" installation means the shutter box and guides are fixed to the surface of the opening (either face or reveal), rather than being built into the wall cavity.

General Fitting Guidelines (Spring Loaded Operation)

The manual spring-assisted mechanism relies on correct tensioning to ensure smooth operation. The general process is as follows:

  1. Preparation & Drilling:
    • Verify opening dimensions against the product size.
    • Mark fixing points on the guide rails. A common method is to drill 7mm pilot holes enlarged to 13mm (for plastic cover caps) at approx. 100mm from each end and then at 1000mm intervals.
    • Ensure the fixing surface (wall or frame) is flat and solid.
  2. Frame Assembly:
    • Insert the box end plate lugs into the top of the guide rails.
    • Lift the assembled frame (box + guides) into position.
    • Crucial: Ensure guide rails are perfectly vertical (plumb) and the box is level. If the guides pinch inwards or bow outwards, the curtain will jam.
    • Fix the guide rails securely to the wall structure.
  3. Spring Tensioning:
    • The internal spring must be tensioned before attaching the curtain.
    • Rotate the axle in the "down" direction for the number of turns specified in your provided instructions.
    • Once tensioned, lock the axle in position (using a pin or tool) to prevent it from unwinding while you load the curtain.
  4. Curtain Installation:
    • Feed the curtain over the top of the axle and down into the guide rail channels.
    • Attach the top of the curtain to the axle using the suspension springs or locking straps provided.
    • Carefully release the axle locking pin. The spring should now support the weight of the curtain.
  5. Final Adjustment & Finishing:
    • Test the operation: The shutter should lift easily and stay in the up position without slamming, and stay down when closed.
    • Adjustment: If the shutter drops on its own, add more spring turns. If it shoots up aggressively, release some tension.
    • Fit the box lid (hood) and secure with screws.
    • Seal around the top of the box and sides of the guides with silicone sealant for weatherproofing.

Safety Note: Spring components are under high tension. Always use appropriate tools and follow the specific turns chart included with your shutter to avoid injury.
