Hörmann RollMatic 2 Insulated Roller Garage Door

The Hörmann RollMatic 2 redefines the electric roller garage door. Unlike standard roller shutters that rely solely on a tubular motor, the RollMatic 2 uses a unique tension spring counterbalance system similar to a sectional door. This innovative design makes the door smoother, safer, and easier to maintain than almost any other roller door on the market.

A Different Approach to Drive Technology

The most significant difference between the RollMatic 2 and standard roller doors (like the RollMatic T) is the external motor drive unit. Instead of being hidden inside the barrel, the motor is mounted externally on the side, driving the shaft via a chain or belt. This design offers several key benefits:

  • Effortless Maintenance: Because the motor is not buried inside the curtain roll, it is easily accessible for servicing or replacement without having to dismantle the entire door.
  • Quieter Operation: The external drive allows for better sound insulation and smoother mechanical transmission, resulting in a noticeably quieter door.
  • Reduced Wear: The motor doesn't have to lift the full deadweight of the curtain alone. The tension springs do the heavy lifting, meaning the motor only needs to guide the door, significantly extending its lifespan.

Safety Without Sensors

One of the standout features of the RollMatic 2 is its inherent safety. Standard roller doors require sensitive bottom-edge sensors or light grids to stop the door if it hits an obstacle. The RollMatic 2 does not.

Because the curtain is counterbalanced by springs, the motor can detect even the slightest resistance. If the door encounters an obstruction—like a child's bike or a car bumper—it stops and reverses immediately. This "soft" safety mechanism is reliable, eliminates the need for fragile cables or batteries in the bottom seal, and removes a common point of failure.

Construction & Finish

The curtain is constructed from high-quality, double-skinned aluminium slats filled with rigid polyurethane foam. This provides excellent stability and thermal insulation. The smooth surface finish offers a modern, clean look that is easy to maintain.

Every RollMatic 2 is made to order, ensuring a perfect fit for your garage. You can choose from a wide range of RAL colours and Decograin timber effects. Crucially, Hörmann colour-matches the side guides and fascia panel to the curtain for a seamless appearance—even on Decograin finishes.

Standard Equipment

The RollMatic 2 comes fully equipped for automated operation:

  • Remote Control: Supplied with two BiSecur hand transmitters (1 x 4-button, 1 x 2-button) and an internal control box with integrated lighting.
  • Emergency Release: A simple pull-cord release allows you to disengage the motor and open the door manually from the inside in seconds. Unlike tubular motor doors that require endless cranking, the spring balance means you can lift this door by hand with minimal effort.
  • Security: Mechanical storm anchors in the guides prevent the curtain from being forced out of its tracks, while a mechanical locking kit resists attempts to lift the door from the outside.

Installation Suitability

The RollMatic 2 is designed for Internal Face Fixing (behind the opening) or Between-Jamb Fixing (in the opening). Ideally, it should be fitted behind the opening to maximise drive-through width. We do not recommend this model for external face fitting.

Summary of Benefits

  • Spring Counterbalance: Reduces motor strain and allows easy manual operation.
  • External Motor: Easy to service, quiet, and reliable.
  • Sensor-Free Safety: Intelligent force limitation detects obstacles without fragile edge sensors.
  • Full Enclosure: Comes with a complete curtain cover/box as standard.
  • Colour Matching: Guides and fascia match the door curtain perfectly.
Application

Applications & Suitability – RollMatic 2

The Hörmann RollMatic 2 is distinct from almost every other roller garage door on the market. While standard roller doors rely on a tubular motor inside the barrel to lift the full dead weight of the curtain, the RollMatic 2 uses a tension spring counterbalance system and an external drive. This unique engineering makes it the preferred choice for specific applications where safety, ease of use, and reliability are paramount.

1. The Best Choice for Manual Accessibility

The most significant advantage of the RollMatic 2 is the manual override system. In a standard tubular motor door, if the power fails, you must insert a crank handle and wind the door up manually, a slow, physically demanding process that can take minutes.

The RollMatic 2 Difference: Because the heavy curtain is counterbalanced by springs, the motor does not hold the weight. In an emergency, you simply pull a cord to disengage the external drive, and you can lift the door by hand with minimal effort. This makes it the ideal application for:

  • Elderly Homeowners: No physical strength is required to crank a heavy gear system.
  • Users with Limited Mobility: If you have shoulder or back issues, this is the safest roller door to operate manually.
  • Emergency Exits: The door can be opened in seconds rather than minutes, which is critical in an emergency.

2. Garages Without a Second Entrance

If your garage is detached or has no pedestrian side door, a power cut can leave you locked out (or in). While all electric doors have emergency release options, the RollMatic 2 is superior for single-entrance garages.

With the optional external release kit, you turn a key in a discreet cylinder on the fascia, which disengages the drive. You can then push the door up effortlessly. There is no need for a fiddly external crank handle hole or the risk of a crank handle snapping under load.

3. High-Traffic Family Homes

The RollMatic 2 features "Soft" force limitation technology. Because the motor is external and the door is balanced, the drive unit is extremely sensitive to obstructions.

Unlike other doors that rely on optical sensors or rubber edge strips (which can be knocked, damaged, or fail due to dirty floors), the RollMatic 2 stops immediately if it touches an obstacle. This makes it a robust solution for busy family garages with children, pets, and bicycles, where sensor misalignment can be a frequent nuisance.

4. Quiet Residential Areas

The external motor drive is mechanically separated from the main barrel and uses a smooth gearing system. Combined with the spring balance, this puts less strain on the motor and results in significantly quieter operation compared to the "hum and rattle" of many tubular motor doors. This is perfect for garages located directly beneath bedrooms or in terraced housing.

5. Short Driveways & Pavement Frontage

Like all roller doors, the RollMatic 2 opens vertically. This allows you to park right up to the door without risking collision. It is fully compliant with regulations for garages opening directly onto public footpaths, as no part of the door swings out during operation.

6. Exposed Locations (High Wind)

The RollMatic 2 is fitted with storm anchors as standard. These are hooks located in the ends of the profiles that lock the curtain into the side guides. This makes the door highly resistant to wind pressure, preventing the curtain from blowing out of the tracks during storms, a common failure point on cheaper roller doors.

Installation

Installation & Fitting Requirements – RollMatic 2

The Hörmann RollMatic 2 is designed for professional installation and requires careful planning to ensure a perfect fit. This section outlines the critical dimensions and installation considerations you need to check before ordering.

Fitting Locations

The RollMatic 2 is engineered for two specific installation scenarios:

  1. Internal Face Fix (Recommended): The door is fitted to the inside face of the garage wall, with the guides and box sitting behind the structural opening. This maximises your drive-through width and height.
  2. Reveal Fix (In-Between): The door is fitted within the opening itself (between the brickwork jambs). The guides and box sit inside the reveal, reducing the available drive-through space.

Important: We do not recommend this model for external face installation. If you require an external fitting, please view the SeceuroGlide range.

Headroom & Sideroom Requirements

To fit the door comfortably, you must ensure you have sufficient clear space:

  • Headroom (Box Size):
    • Doors ≤ 2300 mm high: 290 mm clear headroom required.
    • Doors > 2300 mm high: 335 mm clear headroom required.
  • Sideroom (Guide Width):
    • 110 mm required on each side (all door sizes).

Understanding the RollMatic 2 Ordering System

Critical Difference: Unlike the RollMatic T, the RollMatic 2 uses a different ordering method. You order the opening size (daylight opening), and Hörmann then adds the guides and box on top of this measurement.

How to Measure for Internal Face Fixing (Behind Opening)

This is the most common and recommended method.

  1. Width: Measure the structural opening width at the tightest point. This is your Ordering Width.
  2. Height: Measure from the finished floor level to the underside of the lintel. This is your Ordering Height.
  3. Check Clearance: You need 110 mm of clear wall space on both sides and 290 mm (or 335 mm) of clear space above the lintel for the box.
Example Calculation:
If your structural opening measures 2400 mm wide x 2100 mm high:

You Order: 2400 mm x 2100 mm
Total Installed Width: 2620 mm (2400 + 110 + 110)
Total Installed Height: 2390 mm (2100 + 290)

How to Measure for Reveal Fixing (In-Between Opening)

If you are fitting the door within the opening (less common), you must account for the guides and box within the available space.

  1. Width: Measure the tightest structural width. Deduct 220 mm (110 mm per side) and some tolerance to get your Ordering Width.
  2. Height: Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the lintel. Deduct 290 mm or 335 mm (depending on door height) and tolerance to get your Ordering Height.
Warning: Getting these measurements wrong will result in a door that does not fit. If you are unsure, contact Samson Doors for assistance before ordering.

Motor Position & Access

The external motor drive unit is positioned on the Left Hand Side (when viewed from inside the garage looking out). Ensure there is clear access to this side for installation, maintenance, and emergency manual operation.

Structural Requirements

  • Wall Strength: The walls must be structurally sound and capable of supporting the fixings. Lightweight blockwork or hollow walls may require additional reinforcement.
  • Floor Level: The floor should be reasonably level. Minor irregularities can be accommodated by the flexible rubber bottom seal, but severe slopes may require additional work.
  • Lintel Support: The lintel must be strong enough to support the weight of the curtain box and motor assembly.

Electrical Connection

The motor requires a standard 230V / 240V mains supply. The connection cable is supplied with a 3-pin plug. Ensure a power socket is available within reach of the motor position, or arrange for a qualified electrician to install a spur.

Compensation Kit (Standard)

The RollMatic 2 includes a compensation kit as standard. This allows for minor adjustments if the walls are slightly uneven or out of plumb, ensuring a flush fit without gaps.

Second Entrance Requirement

If your garage has no other means of access (side door or personnel door), you must order the optional external emergency release. This allows you to manually open the door from outside in the event of a power failure.
