Robust Glas-Dor 120: 120-Minute Fire Rated Glazed Steel Door

Product Overview

Maximum Fire Protection for Critical Compartmentation

When building regulations demand the highest level of fire separation, the Robust Glas-Dor 120 delivers. This advanced steel profile system provides up to 120 minutes of certified fire resistance (E120 / EI120)—double the protection of standard fire doors—making it essential for high-rise buildings, critical infrastructure, and complex multi-occupancy developments.

Designed for architects and specifiers working on projects where extended evacuation times are necessary, the Glas-Dor 120 combines exceptional fire performance with the transparency required for modern, light-filled design. It meets the stringent requirements of Approved Document B for buildings over 18 metres in height, complex healthcare facilities, and secure government installations.

Key Features & Benefits

1. Extended 120-Minute Fire Rating

The Glas-Dor 120 offers the ultimate in fire compartmentation, designed for situations where standard 60-minute doors are insufficient:

  • E120 (Integrity): Prevents the passage of flames, smoke, and hot gases for a full 120 minutes—critical for protecting evacuation routes in high-rise buildings where descent times are extended.
  • EI120 (Integrity & Insulation): Available on wall sections up to 3.3m high. Provides the highest level of protection by blocking flames, smoke, AND dangerous radiant heat for 120 minutes, ensuring adjacent spaces remain safe.
  • Door Configuration: Doorsets available up to EI 90/60 (90 minutes integrity, 60 minutes insulation).

2. Engineered for High-Consequence Buildings

The enhanced fire performance makes this system indispensable for buildings where fire safety is non-negotiable:

  • High-Rise Residential: Essential for buildings over 18m where Building Regulations demand extended fire resistance in corridors and lobby separations.
  • Critical Infrastructure: Data centres, control rooms, and secure facilities where extended protection of valuable assets is required.
  • Healthcare: Hospitals and care homes where patient mobility is limited and evacuation may take significantly longer than standard office buildings.

3. Transparent Safety Without Compromise

Unlike concrete or masonry fire walls, the Glas-Dor 120 maintains visual connectivity:

  • Natural Light Penetration: Allows daylight to reach deep into building cores, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
  • Visual Monitoring: Security and management staff can observe corridors and lobbies without opening doors, improving situational awareness during emergencies.
  • Slender Profiles: Available in 50mm or 85mm widths to maximise glazed area while maintaining structural integrity.

4. Multi-Layered Security

The Glas-Dor 120 is not just a fire door—it is a comprehensive security barrier:

  • Intruder Resistance: Tested to EN 1627 up to RC5, suitable for government buildings and high-security applications.
  • Ballistic Protection: Available with EN 1522 FB6 ballistic glazing for embassies and critical national infrastructure.
  • Forced Entry: Heavy-duty steel construction resists sledgehammer and crowbar attacks far more effectively than aluminium systems.

Understanding 120-Minute Fire Protection in UK Buildings

Under the Building Regulations 2010 (Approved Document B), certain building types require fire doors and walls with extended protection periods:

  • Residential Buildings Over 18m: Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy and subsequent regulatory changes, high-rise residential buildings now require 120-minute fire resistance for certain structural elements and compartmentation.
  • Complex Evacuation Scenarios: In hospitals, care homes, and prisons, occupants may be unable to self-evacuate quickly. The 120-minute rating provides a crucial safety margin for assisted evacuation or "defend in place" strategies.
  • Property Protection: In data centres and archives, the extended fire rating protects irreplaceable digital assets and historic records from fire damage for long enough for fire services to intervene.

Technical Design

  • Fire Rating: Up to 120 minutes (E120 wall sections / EI 90/60 doorsets) tested to BS EN 1634-1.
  • Wall Sections: Glazed screens up to 3.3m high with 120-minute integrity and insulation (EI120).
  • Large Screens: 4-metre high wall sections available up to 60 minutes (EI60).
  • Material: Heavy-duty galvanised steel profiles with enhanced fire-resistant core.
  • Acoustic Performance: Up to 55 dB sound reduction available.
  • Profile Options: 50mm (Standard), 85mm (Heavy Duty / Enhanced Security).

Important Ordering Information

This is a "Price on Application" (POA) product.

Due to the bespoke nature of 120-minute fire-rated systems and the complexity of testing and certification requirements, every Glas-Dor 120 installation is individually quoted based on:

  • Opening Dimensions: Each frame is manufactured to exact structural opening sizes.
  • Fire & Security Specification: The combination of fire rating, ballistic protection, and security class affects material selection and glazing type.
  • Hardware Requirements: Panic bars, access control integration, and automatic closing devices are specified to match your building management system.
  • Installation: As a critical life-safety product, we strongly recommend professional installation by certified installers to maintain fire certification validity.

Application

The Robust Glas-Dor 120 is the ultimate life-safety barrier for buildings where standard fire protection is insufficient. By offering extended 120-minute fire resistance alongside high security (RC5), it is uniquely suited for critical infrastructure, high-rise developments, and secure government facilities.

Ideal Applications

1. High-Rise Residential & Mixed-Use

In the post-Grenfell regulatory landscape, high-rise buildings over 18 metres demand rigorous fire compartmentation.

  • Escape Stairs: Protects the integrity of vertical escape routes for a full 2 hours, allowing safe evacuation from upper floors.
  • Lobby Separation: Isolates residential wings from communal lift lobbies, preventing smoke and fire spread.
  • Internal Corridors: Creates long-duration fire breaks in extended corridors.

2. Critical Infrastructure & Data Centres

Facilities housing essential services or high-value assets require maximum protection.

  • Server Rooms: 120-minute insulation (EI120) wall sections protect sensitive servers from the heat of a fire in an adjacent room, preventing data loss even before the flames reach the hardware.
  • Control Rooms: Ensures operational continuity for security and emergency services personnel during a
