ExitGuard: Certified Steel Emergency Exit Doors

Rapid Escape. Robust Protection. Fully Compliant.

The ExitGuard series is a premium made-to-measure steel doorset designed to fulfill two critical roles simultaneously. Primarily, it is a certified life-safety device, ensuring immediate and unobstructed escape for building occupants during an emergency. Secondly, it remains a tough external security barrier, protecting your premises from weather, unauthorized entry, and heat loss.

Purpose-built for the external fabric of commercial and industrial buildings, the ExitGuard offers a "no compromise" solution: it opens effortlessly from the inside when lives depend on it, but remains steadfastly secure from the outside.

Compliance & Safety First

A compliant fire exit strategy is non-negotiable for any commercial building. The ExitGuard is manufactured to meet strict UK and EU safety standards.

  • Panic Bars (BS EN 1125): Full-width cross bars for public buildings (shops, schools, hospitals) where users may panic and not know how to operate the door.
  • Push Pads (BS EN 179): Discreet push pads for staff-only areas where occupants are trained on the escape route.
  • Clear Opening: The frame and hinge design are optimized to maximize the clear drive-through width, essential for rapid evacuation.

Custom Sizing

Every ExitGuard doorset is manufactured to the exact millimetre for your opening, ensuring a perfect fit without the need for excessive packing or on-site modifications.

  • Single Leaf (ExitGuard 1): Max Width 1470mm | Max Height 2970mm.
  • Double Leaf (ExitGuard 2): Max Width 2860mm | Max Height 2970mm.

External Performance: Security & Efficiency

Just because it is a fire exit does not mean it should be a weak point in your building's envelope.

Security:
Unlike flimsy timber or aluminium exits, the ExitGuard features a robust steel leaf and frame construction. It includes integral "dog-bolt" hinges that lock the door leaf into the frame even if the hinge knuckles are cut off, providing excellent resistance against forced entry.

Thermal Efficiency:
Modern building regulations demand energy conservation. The ExitGuard comes with effective thermal performance as standard:

  • Standard: 3.1 W/m²K (honeycomb core).
  • High Efficiency Upgrade: 1.6 W/m²K (polyurethane core) for non-fire rated applications, significantly reducing heat loss in heated warehouses and offices.

Outside Access:
Need the door to be usable as an entrance too? We can fit a lockable Outside Access Device (OAD). This allows keyholders to enter from the outside via a handle or knob, without compromising the panic escape function from the inside.

Application

Applications & Usage Guide

The Samson ExitGuard is a versatile safety solution suitable for almost any commercial or industrial building. However, specifying the correct type of escape hardware is not just a preference—it is a legal requirement based on who uses the building.

Typical Application Sectors

Retail & Leisure

  • Supermarkets & Shops: Rear of store delivery doors that double as fire exits. (Requires Panic Bar).
  • Cinemas & Theatres: High-capacity auditoriums requiring rapid mass evacuation.
  • Gyms & Sports Centres: External exits from changing rooms or courts.

Industrial & Warehousing

  • Factories: Robust steel exits that can withstand heavy daily use and accidental impacts.
  • Warehouses: High-security perimeter doors that prevent theft but allow instant staff egress.
  • Plant Rooms: Ventilation-equipped exits for generator or boiler rooms.

Public Sector & Education

  • Schools & Universities: Durable exits for sports halls and classrooms that resist student wear-and-tear.
  • Hospitals: Hygiene-conscious flush steel doors for corridors and ward exits.
  • Council Buildings: Secure rear exits for libraries and community centres.

Office & Commercial

  • Office Blocks: Stairwell exits leading to external assembly points.
  • Hotels: Ground floor exits from kitchens or conference rooms.
  • Data Centres: High-security exits with no external access hardware to maintain perimeter integrity.
Security Note

While these doors are designed for escape, they are also your building's first line of defence. The ExitGuard series features security dog bolts and anti-jemmy strips as standard, ensuring that your fire exit doesn't become a burglar's entrance.

Specification

Technical Specification: Samson ExitGuard 1

The Samson ExitGuard is built on the proven Metador Defender steel door platform. It is a fully certified, made-to-measure doorset designed to withstand the rigours of daily use while guaranteeing rapid escape in an emergency.

1. Door Leaf Construction

Material Manufactured from 1.5mm Galvanised Steel as standard (Upgrade to 2.0mm available for heavy-duty applications).
(Note: Leaf is formed from two skins bonded to a rigid core).
Construction No-Weld Construction: The leaf uses a unique folded and mechanically fixed design (lockformed) rather than welding. This eliminates the risk of rust developing at weld points, a common failure in cheaper doors.
Thickness 45mm nominal thickness.
Core Honeycomb: High-density resin-impregnated core (Standard).
Mineral Wool: For Fire Rated or Acoustic applications.
Solid Timber: For enhanced security or impact resistance.
Design Includes an integrated Anti-Jemmy Flange on the leading edge to prevent forced entry from the outside.

2. Frame Specification

Profile 90mm or 110mm deep single rebate profile (depending on wall construction).
Manufactured from 1.5mm or 2.0mm High-Tensile Steel.
Installation Easy-Fit Adjusters: Features 8-16 internal threaded fixing adjusters (depending on height) to tolerate uneven openings without the need for excessive packing.
Hinges Minimum 4x Stainless Steel ball-bearing hinges per leaf (BS EN 1935).
Fitted with Security Dog Bolts to lock the leaf into the frame if hinge knuckles are attacked.
Threshold Standard: DDA compliant 2mm Stainless Steel threshold (chamfered).
Options: Low-profile aluminium, ramped, or extended cills available.

3. Performance & Certification

Panic Hardware Fully compatible with BS EN 1125 (Cross bars for public use) and BS EN 179 (Push pads for trained staff).

Installation

Installation Guide: DIY vs. Professional

The Samson steel Doorset is designed with the installer in mind, featuring a unique "Fast-Fit" adjustable frame system. However, due to its heavy-duty construction, it is physically demanding to handle.

1. Handling & Weight (Critical Warning)

Do not underestimate the weight of a steel doorset.

  • Weight: A single Level 2 or Level 3 security specified door can weigh in excess of 80kg - 120kg depending on size and core specification.
  • Manpower: We strongly recommend a minimum of 2 strong people for offloading and positioning. For larger or solid-core doors, 3 people or mechanical lifting aids (genie lift/glass lifter) are advised.
  • Delivery State:
    • Single Doors: Typically delivered fully assembled (door leaf pre-hung in the frame). You may need to separate the leaf from the frame to reduce weight for positioning.
    • Double Doors: Often delivered with the frame and leaves separate to make handling manageable.

2. The "Fast-Fit" Adjustable Frame

The Xtraguard features a clever frame design that removes the need for fiddly packers or shims.

  • Adjusters: The frame is fitted with roughly 16 threaded hexagonal adjusters (depending on size).
  • Method:
    1. Place the frame in the opening.
    2. Use a cordless drill with a hex bit to wind out the adjusters until they grip the wall.
    3. This temporarily "clamps" the frame in place, allowing you to fine-tune the level and plumb without holding the full weight.
    4. Once perfectly level, you drill through the centre of the adjusters into the masonry/steelwork and bolt it home.

3. Tools Required

  • SDS Drill (for masonry fixing holes).
  • Impact Driver (for driving concrete bolts).
  • Long Spirit Level (1800mm+) – Essential for checking the hinge jamb is 100% vertical.
  • 12mm / 14mm Hex Bit (for frame adjusters).
  • Crowbar / Air Wedge (for final lifting/positioning).

4. Should I Install It Myself?

DIY / Builder

Pros: Save on labour costs.

Cons: Handling the weight can be dangerous without experience. If the frame is not fitted 100% square (even 2mm out), the heavy door will not latch correctly or may swing open/closed on its own.

Professional Door Installer

Pros: They will have the lifting gear and experience to handle the weight safely. They understand how to "toe-and-heel" glaze and adjust heavy-duty hinges for perfect operation.

Cons: Higher initial cost.

Recommendation: If you are an experienced builder with a helper, the "Fast-Fit" system makes this a straightforward job. If you are a DIY novice, we strongly advise hiring a professional purely due to the health and safety risks of handling heavy steel doors.

Measure
A steel doorset is always ordered by the OVERALL dimensions including the door leaf and outer sub fixing frame with no tolerances allowed for. Most people would generally allow 5mm tolerance all the way around the door, but it all depends on how square or true your aperture is on site.
This means if your structural opening size is measured as 1000mm width and 2100mm height the door and frame ought to be 990mm wide and 2090mm high with the frame and any threshold included.
Always measure the top, middle and bottom of your aperture width and the left and right hand side for the height and if possible do a measure to make sure the opening is square as well..
Always use millimetres for measuring as this is how we relay back the ordering dimensions to you for checking and approving a drawing for your order.

The ExitGuard does have an adjustable fitting frame to take up to 30mm of tolerance into account which helps when the opening is not square.
