Trellidor ShutterView® Classic - Made to Measure Aluminium Plantation Shutters

There are situations where a standard louvre shutter simply is not enough. A ground floor bedroom window that faces a shared pathway. A door into a utility space or side access with no other barrier. A home where the level of risk is higher, or where the homeowner just wants the confidence of knowing the shutter can take a serious attempt to force it. The ShutterView® Classic is built for those situations.

It carries the same made to measure aluminium frame, the same S shaped double walled louvre profile, and the same range of operating configurations as the TX. But each louvre in the Classic is reinforced with an internal threaded steel rod running through its full length, and that changes what the shutter can withstand considerably. Where the TX is rated medium strength, the Classic is rated high. Extensively attack tested against Trellidor's own standards, it functions as both a working burglar bar and a proper louvre shutter within a single, clean installation.

The Steel Rod Difference

The defining feature of the ShutterView® Classic is structural, not cosmetic. Each 93mm S shaped louvre is double walled aluminium, the same profile used across the ShutterView® range, but threaded internally with a steel rod that runs through the blade from end to end. Under the kind of force that would deform or dislodge a standard louvre, the steel core holds the blade in shape and keeps it seated in the frame.

This matters because louvres are the obvious attack point on any slatted shutter. A determined attempt to force access through a louvre shutter typically involves trying to bend or remove individual blades to create a gap. The threaded rod makes that substantially harder. The louvre cannot be easily deformed, and with the multipoint locking system engaged, featuring multiple lock points along the height of the shutter, the panel as a whole becomes a credible barrier rather than simply a deterrent.

The lock can be operated from both sides of the shutter, which is a practical consideration for installations where the shutter serves a door and needs to be secured from the outside as well as released from the inside.

Attack Tested, Not Just Rated

Trellidor has been manufacturing security barriers since 1976. The ShutterView® Classic has been put through extensive attack testing rather than simply assigned a strength rating based on materials. That distinction is worth noting, as a lot of security products in the UK are given ratings based on component specifications alone. Trellidor's approach is to test the finished assembly under real world attack conditions. The high strength rating of the Classic reflects how the product actually performs under pressure, not just what its constituent parts suggest it should do.

For a homeowner weighing the Classic against a roller shutter or a traditional trellis type security grille, the attack testing provides a credible basis for comparison. The Classic will not replace a roller shutter in a high risk commercial context, but for a residential opening, particularly one where the homeowner also wants light control and privacy management rather than a permanently opaque barrier, it is a properly tested and genuinely robust option.

All the Shutter Benefits With No Compromise on Security

The Classic does not trade usability for strength. The louvre indexing system, the woolpile sealing strips, and the smooth side locks all carry over from the TX specification. Every louvre tilts in unison via the patented inbuilt indexing wheel, and the louvres can be positioned at any angle from fully open to fully closed.

When fully open, the shutter is largely transparent, allowing light to fill the room, air to move freely, and the view through to be unobstructed. Partially tilted, it diffuses direct glare and moderates heat gain through south facing or west facing glazing without closing off the opening entirely. Fully closed with the lock engaged, it is a security barrier. The woolpile strip on each louvre closes out draught, limits light bleed at the edges, and keeps the panel tight when the louvres are shut.

That range of function is what separates this from every other security product of comparable strength. A roller shutter does one thing. A trellis grille does one thing. The Classic handles security, light, privacy, airflow, and heat management within the same installation, meaning there is no stacking of separate products and no compromise on the look of the room.

Privacy Including the Optional Louvre Latch

The multipoint locking system of the Classic secures the shutter itself, but the optional Louvre Latch adds a separate layer of privacy control when the shutter is in use rather than locked out. The custom made latch holds the louvres in a fixed closed position without requiring the main lock to be engaged, which is useful for daytime use when the shutter is operational but you want the blades held shut rather than tilted.

As with the TX, the Classic can be ordered in a split configuration where the louvres are divided into upper and lower sections. Each section tilts independently, which allows light to enter from the top half of the opening while the bottom half remains closed and private. It is a particularly effective arrangement for windows at street level or in rooms where overlooking is a consideration.

Finishes and Colour Options

All components are pretreated for enhanced corrosion resistance before being powder coated with a UV resistant polyester finish. Eight standard colours are available:

  • White
  • Matt Bronze
  • Matt Sand
  • Matt Beige Grey
  • Matt Aluminium
  • Matt Charcoal
  • Matt Black
  • Matt Stone Grey

Nonstandard colours can be specified on request at an additional cost. The hinges are colour matched aluminium throughout, and the overall effect, even in the darker colourways, is of a considered architectural product rather than a security fitting.

Configurations

The Classic is available in the same five operating formats as the rest of the ShutterView® range. Each is made to measure for the specific opening:

  • Hinged: single or double panel; suited to standard windows and doors
  • Bifold: stacks to one or both sides; appropriate for wider openings
  • French: two panel configuration for French doors or paired windows
  • Slider: horizontal sliding panels; requires adequate depth on the track run
  • Fixed: permanently set; for openings where ventilation is not required but security and light control are

The final configuration is always determined by the site survey. Dimensions, frame depth, surrounding structure, and any access requirements all influence what works in a given opening.

Standard Specification

  • Louvre material: Double walled aluminium, S shaped profile
  • Internal reinforcement: Threaded steel rod through each louvre

TX or Classic?

Both models share the same architectural aluminium frame, S shaped louvre profile, indexing system, colour range, and configuration options. The difference is entirely in the strength of the louvre itself. The TX carries a medium strength rating and suits homes with peripheral security already in place. The Classic steps up to a high strength rating through the addition of a threaded steel rod in each louvre, plus a lock that can be operated from either side, making it the appropriate choice for high risk openings, exposed positions, or anywhere that the shutter is the primary line of defence.

If you are unsure which model suits your situation, a site survey will clarify what is needed based on the specific opening, its location, and the existing security arrangements around it.
