Robust Glas-Dor 60 Minute Fire Rated Steel Door

Product Overview

Elegant Fire Protection Without Compromise

In modern commercial architecture, the balance between natural light and strict fire safety is critical. The Robust Glas-Dor is a precision-engineered, fully glazed steel profile system designed to deliver up to 60 minutes of certified fire resistance without creating dark, enclosed spaces.

Unlike traditional solid steel fire doors that can feel oppressive, the Glas-Dor creates light-filled, welcoming environments in hotels, offices, schools, and hospitals. It acts as a transparent firewall—retaining the aesthetic appeal of an open-plan design while providing a robust life-safety barrier that meets strict UK Building Regulations (Approved Document B).

Key Features & Benefits

1. Certified 60-Minute Fire Resistance

This specific model is engineered to provide 60 minutes of fire protection, a critical standard for protecting escape routes and compartmenting buildings. It is available in two distinct classifications to suit your fire strategy:

  • E60 (Integrity): Holds back flames and smoke for 60 minutes, preventing fire spread.
  • EI60 (Integrity & Insulation): The gold standard for life safety. It blocks flames, smoke, AND significantly reduces dangerous heat transmission for 60 minutes, ensuring escape corridors remain passable and combustible materials on the other side do not ignite.

2. Maximised Vision, Minimised Steel

The Glas-Dor features slender steel profiles (available in 30mm, 50mm, or 85mm widths) designed to maximise the glass area. This allows light to flood through building interiors—crucial for compliance with light-flow requirements in modern schools and offices—while maintaining the structural strength required for a security door.

3. High-Security Construction

Do not let the glass fool you. This is a high-security steel door system at its core:

  • Intruder Resistant: Tested to EN 1627 RC3, capable of withstanding aggressive forced entry attempts.
  • Robust Steel Profile: The frame and leaf are constructed from heavy-duty galvanised steel profiles, far stronger than aluminium alternatives.
  • Glazing: Utilises specialist multi-laminate fire glass that is tough, durable, and secure.

4. Custom Architectural Finishes

Every Glas-Dor is bespoke. The steel profiles can be polyester powder coated (PPC) in any RAL colour to match your building's façade or interior design scheme. From discreet greys for corporate HQs to vibrant colours for educational settings, the finish is durable and scratch-resistant.

Why Fire Rated Glazing Matters in Commercial Buildings

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, commercial building owners (the "Responsible Person") must ensure escape routes are protected.

  • Compartmentation: Fire doors are essential for "compartmenting" a fire—trapping it in one room to allow safe evacuation elsewhere.
  • Visibility for Safety: In busy corridors (e.g., hospitals, schools), solid fire doors can cause collisions. Glazed fire doors allow visibility of oncoming traffic and let occupants see if a fire is raging on the other side before opening the door.
  • Legal Compliance: Installing certified, tested fire doorsets like the Glas-Dor ensures you meet insurance requirements and legal obligations under current UK fire safety laws.

Technical Design

  • Fire Rating: 60 Minutes (E60 or EI60 available) tested to BS EN 1634-1.
  • Material: Galvanised steel profiles (fully welded and polished).
  • Acoustic Rating: Capable of up to 45 dB sound reduction (depending on glass spec).
  • Security Rating: Available up to RC3 (EN 1627).
  • Configuration: Single or Double doorsets, with optional side and over-panels to create large glazed screens.
  • Smoke Rating: Certified to EN 1634-3 (Sa / S200) for smoke control.

Important Ordering Information

This is a "Price on Application" (POA) product.

Because every Glas-Dor is manufactured to exact dimensions with specific fire, security, and hardware requirements, we cannot provide off-the-shelf pricing.

  • Made to Measure: Every door is custom-built in the UK to your structural opening sizes.
  • Hardware: We specify hardware (handles, closers, panic bars) to meet your exact usage needs (e.g., access control integration).
  • Installation: As a life-safety product, we strongly recommend professional installation to ensure the fire certification is maintained.
Application

The Robust Glas-Dor bridges the gap between architectural aesthetics and life-safety compliance. By combining the strength of steel with the transparency of glass, it is the ideal solution for high-traffic commercial environments where visibility, natural light, and fire protection are paramount.

Ideal Applications

1. Educational Institutions

Schools, colleges, and universities require robust doors that can withstand heavy daily foot traffic while ensuring student safety.

  • Corridor Separation: Acts as a 60-minute fire break in long corridors without blocking sightlines for staff supervision.
  • Library & Study Areas: Creates quiet, separate study zones that remain visible and light-filled.
  • Durability: The steel frame resists damage from bags and constant use far better than timber alternatives.

2. Healthcare Facilities

In hospitals and clinics, hygiene and visibility are critical.

  • Ward Entrances: Allows nursing staff to observe patients without entering the ward, reducing disturbance.
  • Hygiene Control: The smooth steel and glass surfaces are easy to clean and resist bacteria harborage.
  • Fire Safety: Provides essential EI60 compartmentation to protect vulnerable patients during an evacuation.

3. Corporate Offices & Commercial Buildings

Modern offices demand open-plan layouts with legally required fire separation.

  • Atriums & Lobbies: Creates a stunning, secure entrance feature that meets fire regulations.
  • Meeting Rooms: Acoustic-rated glazing options (up to 55dB) ensure privacy for meetings while maintaining an open feel.
  • Stairwells: Protects vertical escape routes from smoke ingress while encouraging stair usage through visibility.

4. Retail & Hospitality

For hotels, restaurants, and high-end retail, the door must look as good as it performs.

  • Hotel Corridors: Separates guest room wings from lift lobbies with EI60 fire protection.
  • Shopfronts: High-security (RC3/RC4) external doors that protect stock without creating a "fortress" appearance.
  • Restaurant Entrances: Draught lobbies that welcome customers with full-height glazing.

5. Transport Hubs

Airports and train stations require doors that can handle thousands of cycles a day.

  • Security Lines: Transparent barriers that separate landside and airside zones.
  • Waiting Rooms: Comfortable, acoustic-separated waiting areas that remain visible for security monitoring.

Why Choose the Glas-Dor for Your Project?

Aesthetic Integration

Available in any RAL colour, the slender steel profiles can either blend seamlessly into the surrounding architecture or stand out as a design feature. Unlike aluminium, the steel construction allows for narrower frames with higher fire ratings.

Enhanced Security

For external applications, the Glas-Dor offers peace of mind. Tested to RC3, RC4, and even ballistic standards (FB6), it provides a level of physical protection that standard aluminium glazing cannot match, making it suitable for banks, embassies, and high-value retail.

Compliance Made Simple

By specifying a fully certified doorset (tested to EN 1634-1), you ensure your building meets the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The Glas-Dor takes the headache out of compliance for the "Responsible Person."
