DescriptionSamson FireGuard Steel Fire Rated Doorsets
The Samson FireGuard Range consists of three versions of high-quality steel doorsets manufactured from corrosion-resistant Magnelis® steel, ensuring superior performance and longevity when compared to galvanised steel or timber alternatives.
Each of these doors offers fire protection for a specified duration, preventing the spread of fire and smoke in a building, and their general performance is greater than equivalent timber fire doorsets.
The doors have been tested to BS EN 1634-1; their individual fire protection figures are as below:
- FireGuard FD 60 – up to 1 hour (60 minutes)
- FireGuard FD 120 – up to 2 hours (120 minutes)
- FireGuard FD 240 – up to 4 hours (240 minutes)
Each door is made to order for a perfect fit – an essential part of the fire protection. Available with a honeycomb core as standard, mineralwool core can be substituted where thermal transference needs to be reduced, or a timber core for added strength and reinforcement.
A wide range of ironmongery can be specified depending on the environment and use within the building on a daily basis. Various door closers can be incorporated and there is a wide choice of powder-coated colour finishes as well as laminate woodgrain finishes. Each side of the door panel can be a different finish if required, and the outer frame can also match or be specified in a different colour (powder coat finish only).
Fire-rated steel doors expand into their outer fixing sub-frame under heat, sealing off the room where the fire has broken out and preventing the spread of smoke and flames. They play an important role in emergency fire procedures in any building and should be installed to help your building comply with fire safety legislation.
A steel doorset is a door, hardware and fixing frame preassembled in a factory environment to ensure complete continuity of final quality and specification. There is so much debate now about the actual integrity of a fire-rated door which is assembled from various components, more often than not from different sources, that it won't be too long before a 'doorset' is the only way to assure 100% compliance. The risks involved are too high when a door is not built to an exacting standard to perform as originally tested and approved using all components from the same source to ensure a continuation of compliance.
Samson FireGuard doorsets are supplied fully assembled with hardware fitted as standard, drastically reducing installation time and adding value to a project. The single fix design offers greater cost savings when priced against overall installation times for timber doors, and the inherent durability of steel means that in areas of high traffic or potential abuse, the 'whole life' cost of a steel doorset significantly outweighs that of a timber doorset.
ApplicationThe Samson FireGuard range is designed primarily for the prevention of fire spread internally within a building. It is the ideal solution for protecting occupants and property in a wide variety of environments, including domestic, industrial, and commercial premises.
Traditionally, steel doors were reserved for industrial areas due to their appearance. However, with our high-quality powder-coated colours and realistic laminate woodgrain finishes, FireGuard doors are visually indistinguishable from premium timber doors. This allows them to blend seamlessly into high-specification interiors—such as offices, apartment blocks, and hotels—while providing the superior durability and fire integrity that only steel can offer.
Typical applications include:
- Internal compartmentation in schools, hospitals, and public buildings.
- Communal entrances and corridor doors in residential flats (HMOs).
- Connecting doors between garages and main dwelling areas.
- Secure internal office doors requiring fire compliance.
- Industrial unit segregation.
Important Distinction: Fire Rated vs. Fire Exit
Please note: The Samson FireGuard is engineered as a fire-rated doorset intended to seal an opening and prevent the passage of fire and smoke (compartmentation). While it is a critical safety component, it should not be confused with a dedicated "Fire Exit" door, which is primarily designed for external emergency egress. The FireGuard’s primary function is containment.
SpecificationThe Samson FireGuard range is tested to BS 476 Parts 20 & 22 and BS EN 1634. Doors are certified for fire resistance in both directions and are available latched or unlatched in three fire resistance classifications: FD 60 (60 mins), FD 120 (120 mins), and FD 240 (240 mins).
Hardware & Access Control
FireGuard internal fire doors can be fitted with a wide variety of mortice locks and latches. All lock cases are tested to BS EN 12209 and all lever furniture to BS EN 1906. Options include mortice multi-point locking (such as 3-point sashlocks) and access control mechanisms (mechanical keypads, electric strikes, and electro-magnetic locks) in surface-mounted or concealed configurations.
We can also fit FireGuard with a range of panic hardware to comply with BS EN 1125 and BS EN 179, along with outside access devices for practical, controlled entry to secure premises.

Wall Construction Suitability
All Samson FireGuard doors can be installed in masonry, concrete, and flexible stud walls (cold wall style).
Important: When using timber or steel stud walls, the client must ensure they have adequate evidence that the wall can support steel fire doors under fire conditions.
For FD 120 and FD 240 ratings: Stud wall constructions should have the wall's reveal face protected by a fire-resisting board to protect the wall construction.

MeasureMeasuring Guidance for Samson FireGuard Doorsets
Ordering a steel doorset requires precision. Unlike timber doors where you can plane edges to fit, steel doorsets are manufactured to exact dimensions with no on-site adjustment to the leaf itself. Please follow these guidelines to ensure a perfect fit.
1. How to Measure the Opening
Always take measurements in millimetres (mm). We will use mm for all order confirmations and technical drawings.
- Width: Measure the structural opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Take the smallest of these three measurements.
- Height: Measure the structural opening at the left and right sides. Take the smallest of these two measurements.
- Squareness: Check the diagonals (corner to corner) to ensure the opening is square. Significant differences may require smaller ordering sizes or packing.
2. Calculating Your Ordering Size (Overall Frame Dimensions)
Steel doorsets are always ordered by their OVERALL FRAME DIMENSIONS (including the door leaf, outer sub-frame, and threshold). You must deduct a fitting tolerance from your structural opening measurements to get your ordering size.
Example Calculation (Standard 5mm Tolerance):
If your smallest structural opening measurements are:
Width: 1000mm
Height: 2100mm
Your ORDERING SIZE should be:
Width: 990mm (1000mm - 10mm total for left/right gap)
Height: 2090mm (2100mm - 10mm total for top/bottom gap)
Note: The exact tolerance depends on how square/true your site aperture is. Standard practice is to allow approximately 5mm clearance on all sides (10mm deduction on width and 10mm on height).
3. The Adjustable Frame Advantage
The Samson FireGuard features a unique adjustable fixing sub-frame. This design can accommodate site tolerances of up to +30mm, making installation significantly easier if your structural opening is slightly out of square or uneven.
