Markilux 790 Side Screen
The Markilux 790 side screen is a retractable fabric wind breaker that also helps with low sun and privacy on exposed outdoor seating areas. It is particularly well suited to commercial terraces, balconies and pavement seating, where a sheltered edge can make the space more comfortable for customers and staff.
Use in commercial and domestic spaces
For cafés, restaurants, pubs and hotels, the screen can be used between tables, along railings, or at the edge of a terrace to reduce crosswinds without enclosing the area. It can also help to screen guests from passing foot traffic or neighbouring outdoor spaces, which is useful on busy frontages and in shared courtyards.
In domestic gardens and patios, it is a simple way to create a more protected corner for seating or dining, especially in overlooked or breezy spots. Because it retracts back into its cassette when not required, it keeps the space open and uncluttered.
Design and operation
The screen is housed in a compact aluminium cassette fitted vertically to the wall, helping to protect the fabric when it is retracted. To use, the front profile is pulled across and located onto a docking post or a wall locating bracket on the opposite side.
Fixing options for the receiving side can suit different installations, including wall mounting, railing brackets and free-standing docking posts. Spring tension helps keep the fabric taut when extended for a neat finish.
Fabric, colours and appearance
A wide choice of fabric colours is available, making it straightforward to coordinate with an existing awning, surrounding finishes or commercial branding. Frame components, including the cassette and post, are also available in a choice of colours, with non-standard RAL options available if required.
Sizing and configuration
The Markilux 790 is made to suit a defined range of sizes, so it can be specified to match the area you want to protect. Where needed, the fabric can be cut on a diagonal to follow features such as a sloping roofline or a projecting awning, helping to close off awkward gaps.
The Markilux 790 side screen is a versatile solution for managing outdoor spaces, providing an effective barrier against low-level sun, light winds, and prying eyes. Its retractable design makes it particularly useful in locations where permanent walls or fences would be intrusive or restricted.
Commercial Hospitality
For the hospitality sector, the 790 serves as a practical tool for extending the usability of outdoor dining areas. In cafés, restaurants, and pubs, it provides essential shelter from draughts that can otherwise make pavement seating uncomfortable.
It is frequently used to:
- Define boundaries: Clearly separate a dining terrace from a public footpath or neighbouring business.
- Increase capacity: Make exposed tables usable on breezy days or during cooler evenings.
- Provide privacy: Screen diners from busy street traffic or car parks.
- Enhance branding: With a wide choice of fabric colours, the screen can be matched to the establishment's colour scheme.
Domestic Gardens and Balconies
In residential settings, the side screen effectively turns an open patio into a private outdoor room. It is often installed to block the view from neighbouring properties or to provide shelter for a specific seating area.
Common domestic uses include:
- Balcony privacy: Using clamp brackets to attach the screen to a handrail, preventing being overlooked by adjacent apartments.
- Low sun protection: Blocking the glare of the rising or setting sun which often shines underneath overhead awnings.
- Hot tub shelter: Creating a secluded area for spas and hot tubs without building permanent structures.
Specialist Configurations
The Markilux 790 can be adapted for more complex architectural situations. The fabric can be manufactured with a diagonal cut (sloping top edge) to match the pitch of a roof, a conservatory side, or the angle of a folding-arm awning.
For spaces where a fixed post is not possible or desired, the system can be paired with the 'Mobilfix'—a mobile granite baseplate on rollers. This allows the screen to be deployed flexibly on flat patios, ideal for venues that need to clear the terrace completely at the end of the day.
The Markilux 790 is a made-to-measure retractable fabric side screen system comprising a wall-mounted cassette, extendable fabric cover, and a receiving docking point. It is manually operated by a handle fitted to the front profile.

The maximum extension achievable depends on the selected height and fabric choice.
Installation and fixings
Cassette fixing: The aluminium cassette is installed vertically to the wall using concealed brackets. A range of bracket types ensures secure fitting to different surfaces.
Docking options: To extend the screen, the front profile is pulled out and secured to a docking point. Options include:
- Docking post: A free-standing post which can be bolted to a solid surface (using a welded base plate) or inserted into a ground sleeve.
- Wall bracket: A locating bracket that allows the handle to hook directly onto an opposing wall or reveal.
- Handrail bracket: A clamp bracket for attaching the front profile to a balcony railing or balustrade.

The Markilux 790 is designed for straightforward installation and can be fitted to almost any façade or solid surface with minimal structural work. As a manually operated system, it requires no electrical connections, making it one of the quickest and easiest Markilux products to install.
Step 1: Fixing the Cassette
The compact aluminium cassette, which houses the rolled fabric, is installed vertically. It is typically fitted directly to a wall or existing structure using concealed brackets that slide into the rear of the cassette profile, ensuring a clean finish with no visible fixings.
For locations without a suitable wall (such as an open terrace corner), the cassette can alternatively be mounted to a free-standing support post.
Step 2: Installing the Docking Point
Once the cassette is secure, a docking point is installed opposite to receive the extended handle. The choice of docking point depends on the site layout:
- Wall Bracket: A small hooking bracket screwed directly to an opposing wall or reveal.
- Docking Post: A vertical post for open areas, which can be bolted to a patio or decking surface, or set into a ground sleeve for easy removal.
- Handrail Clamp: A specialised clamp that attaches to a balcony railing, removing the need for drilling into the floor.
- Mobilfix: A mobile granite baseplate that requires no installation at all—simply wheel it into position.
Step 3: Tension and Adjustment
The system is pre-tensioned, but the cassette brackets allow for minor adjustments to ensure the screen hangs perfectly plumb. Once the docking point is aligned, the screen is ready for immediate use.

When purchasing a Markilux product through Samson Doors, you are investing in German engineering designed for longevity. The Markilux 790 Side Screen is covered by a manufacturer’s warranty that protects against defects in materials and workmanship, provided the product is used and maintained correctly.
5-Year Limited Warranty
Markilux offers a 5-year limited warranty on the following system components:
- Frame and Cassette: Covers the aluminium profiles, cassette housing, and mechanical components against structural failure or manufacturing defects.
- Mechanism: Includes the spring tension system and roller tube assembly, ensuring the screen extends and retracts smoothly.
- Fabrics: The awning covers (sunvas, sunsilk, visutex) are warranted against rot and unusual colour fading, subject to normal environmental conditions.
Conditions of Warranty
To ensure your warranty remains valid, please note the following:
- Installation: The product must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's official fitting instructions.
- Usage: The side screen is designed as a sun and wind protection system for domestic use. It should be retracted in heavy winds (gale force) or severe weather conditions to prevent damage.
- Maintenance: Regular cleaning of the frame and fabric using simple water and mild soap is recommended. The fabric should be allowed to dry before being retracted for long periods to prevent mould or mildew forming on surface dirt.
Please note: The warranty covers the supply of replacement parts or repair of the product. It does not cover consequential costs such as access equipment or third-party labour unless explicitly stated in your specific purchase agreement.
The Markilux 790 is a made-to-measure product, so accurate dimensions are essential to ensure the side screen fits correctly and operates smoothly. Taking measurements is straightforward, but it is important to consider both the height and extension required, as well as the location of the cassette and docking point.
Step 1: Determine the Height
Measure the vertical distance from the point where the cassette will be mounted down to the finished floor level. The cassette can be positioned at any practical height, but it is typically installed just below eaves level, a balcony soffit, or an existing awning.
Standard heights available are 173 cm, 213 cm and 250 cm. If your requirement falls between these sizes, intermediate heights can be manufactured (minimum 90 cm).
Step 2: Measure the Extension
Measure the horizontal distance from the wall where the cassette will be fitted across to the docking point (either an opposing wall, post location, or handrail). This is the extension length required when the screen is fully pulled out.
The maximum extension depends on the fabric type:
- Seamless covers: Up to 450 cm
- Panelled covers (120 cm width): Up to 400 cm
If the measurement is close to the maximum, consider whether you need the screen to extend fully taut or if a slightly shorter extension would be more practical for ease of operation.
Step 3: Check for Obstructions
Ensure there are no pipes, drainage fittings, lighting, or other obstacles in the path of the cassette or where the fabric will extend. The cassette requires a flat vertical surface for secure mounting, and the docking point must align horizontally with the cassette outlet.
Step 4: Consider Angled or Sloping Installations
If the side screen is to be installed beneath a sloping roof, pergola, or folding-arm awning, the fabric can be cut diagonally to follow the pitch. In this case, note the angle or measure the height difference between the start and end points of the fabric edge.
Professional Survey
For commercial installations or complex configurations, a site survey is recommended. Samson Doors may be able to arrange a technical site visit to verify measurements depending on your location, assess fixing points, and recommend the most suitable docking solution for your specific application.
