Description

Samson Defender Extreme-2 (SR3) Double Steel Doorset

The Samson Defender Extreme-2 is a high-security, custom-built double leaf steel doorset, designed to provide verified protection for high-value assets and critical infrastructure. Manufactured in the UK by Metador to rigorous standards, this door achieves a C5 security rating (equivalent to the former SR3) under the stringent LPS 1175 Issue 8 testing standard.

Tested and accredited by the BRE (Building Research Establishment), the Defender Extreme-2 offers proven resistance against determined attacks using a wide range of heavy-duty tools, including crowbars, axes, and cordless power tools, for a minimum of 5 minutes. This makes it an essential investment for facilities requiring a serious, certified security upgrade.

Certified Construction & Design

Unlike the misconception that high-security doors must look "industrial," the Defender Extreme-2 combines formidable strength with aesthetic flexibility. The double-skinned steel leaves are folded and mechanically fixed or welded (depending on specification) to form a rigid barrier, filled with a mineral wool core and steel strengtheners.

Ideally suited for external use, the doorset is typically supplied as outward opening to maximise attack resistance (the rebate prevents the leaves being driven inward).

  • Certification: LPS 1175 Issue 8 rating C5 (SR3).
  • Manufacture: Produced entirely in the UK by Metador for Samson Doors.
  • Finish: Available in over 200 polyester powder coat (PPC) colours to match any building façade, with Marine Grade finishes available for coastal environments.

Dimensions & Configurations

The Samson Defender Extreme-2 is a truly bespoke product, made to measure to suit your specific structural opening.

  • Max Width (Double Door): Up to 2890mm structural opening width.
  • Max Height: Up to 2490mm (Standard) or extended up to 3440mm with removable or solid over-panels.
  • Side Panels: Fixed side panels can be incorporated to span wider openings up to approx 4900mm, fully tested to the same SR3 standard.

Note: A single leaf version, the Samson Defender Extreme-1 (SR3), is also readily available for personnel access requirements.

Hardware & Installation

Security is only as effective as the locking system. The Defender Extreme-2 is factory-fitted with high-security hardware that has been specifically tested as part of the accredited doorset.

  • Locking: Multi-point locking systems, heavy-duty panic bars, and electro-mechanical options are available, all approved to the LPS 1175 C5 rating.
  • Frame: Supplied with a factory-fitted steel sub-frame containing all necessary fixing points, ensuring the installation is as robust as the door itself.
  • Thresholds: A variety of threshold options are available, including DDA compliant low-profile and dropped thresholds for weather rating. (Please check suitability for internal vs external use based on weather sealing requirements).

Options & Upgrades

To meet specific site requirements, the Defender Extreme-2 can be customised with:

  • Vision Panels: High-security glazing options (SR3 rated).
  • Louvres: Secure ventilation grilles tested to LPS 1175.
  • Thermal & Acoustic: Upgrades available to enhance U-values (down to 1.5 W/m²K) and sound reduction (up to 36dB Rw).
Application

Any commercial or industrial building requiring very high levels of security at all times. SR3 steel doors are tested against a wider range of tools, including modern power tools to offer greater resistance to attack than SR2 rated doors. The doors are designed to resist an attack for at least 5 minutes when the intruders are not too bothered about some noise made either.

Not only do these doors offer greater levels of security, they are also manufactured to higher standards with stronger overall integrity and components used and therefore always tend to have greater longevity through their durability.

Installation

Installation Guide: DIY vs. Professional

The Metador Defender Double Doorset is designed with the installer in mind, featuring a unique "Fast-Fit" adjustable frame system. However, due to its heavy-duty construction, it is physically demanding to handle.

1. Handling & Weight (Critical Warning)

Do not underestimate the weight of this door.

  • Weight: A single Level 2 or Level 3 steel door can weigh in excess of 80kg - 120kg depending on size and core specification.
  • Manpower: We strongly recommend a minimum of 2 strong people for offloading and positioning. For larger or solid-core doors, 3 people or mechanical lifting aids (genie lift/glass lifter) are advised.
  • Delivery State:
    • Single Doors: Typically delivered fully assembled (door leaf pre-hung in the frame). You may need to separate the leaf from the frame to reduce weight for positioning.
    • Double Doors: Often delivered with the frame and leaves separate to make handling manageable.

2. The "Fast-Fit" Adjustable Frame

The Extreme features a clever frame design that removes the need for fiddly packers or shims.

  • Adjusters: The frame is fitted with roughly 16 threaded hexagonal adjusters (depending on size).
  • Method:
    1. Place the frame in the opening.
    2. Use a cordless drill with a hex bit to wind out the adjusters until they grip the wall.
    3. This temporarily "clamps" the frame in place, allowing you to fine-tune the level and plumb without holding the full weight.
    4. Once perfectly level, you drill through the centre of the adjusters into the masonry/steelwork and bolt it home.

3. Tools Required

  • SDS Drill (for masonry fixing holes).
  • Impact Driver (for driving concrete bolts).
  • Long Spirit Level (1800mm+) – Essential for checking the hinge jamb is 100% vertical.
  • 12mm / 14mm Hex Bit (for frame adjusters).
  • Crowbar / Air Wedge (for final lifting/positioning).

4. Should I Install It Myself?

DIY / Builder

Pros: Save on labour costs.

Cons: Handling the weight can be dangerous without experience. If the frame is not fitted 100% square (even 2mm out), the heavy door will not latch correctly or may swing open/closed on its own.

Professional Door Installer

Pros: They will have the lifting gear and experience to handle the weight safely. They understand how to "toe-and-heel" glaze and adjust heavy-duty hinges for perfect operation.

Cons: Higher initial cost.

Recommendation: If you are an experienced builder with a helper, the "Fast-Fit" system makes this a straightforward job. If you are a DIY novice, we strongly advise hiring a professional purely due to the health and safety risks of handling heavy steel doors.

Measure

How to Measure for Your Steel Doorset

Ordering a steel doorset is straightforward, but accuracy is critical. Unlike some timber doors, steel doorsets are manufactured to exact engineering tolerances. We rely on you to provide the OVERALL manufacturing size (Door Leaf + Frame), not the opening size.

1. Understand the Manufacturing Size

When you place an order, the dimensions you give us will be the exact size of the door frame itself. We do not deduct any tolerance for you.

The "Fitting Clearance" Rule:
We recommend allowing a minimum of 10mm clearance on the width (5mm each side) and 5mm - 10mm clearance on the height (top gap).

Example Calculation:
If your structural opening measures 2300mm wide x 2100mm high, you should order a doorset size of:
Width: 2290mm (2300mm - 10mm clearance)
Height: 2090mm (2100mm - 10mm clearance)

Note: This clearance allows you to shim the frame level if your brickwork is slightly uneven. If your opening is very rough or out of square, you may wish to allow more tolerance.

2. Measuring Your Aperture

Follow these steps to ensure your opening is suitable:

  • Measure Width: Take three measurements (Top, Middle, Bottom). Use the smallest of these three figures as your structural width.
  • Measure Height: Take two measurements (Left and Right). Use the smallest of these two figures as your structural height.
  • Check for Square: Measure the diagonals (top-left to bottom-right, and top-right to bottom-left). If these differ significantly, your opening is not square, and you may need to allow extra tolerance or pack out the frame.

3. Key Points to Remember

  • Use Millimetres: Always measure and order in mm. This avoids confusion and ensures precision.
  • Include the Threshold: The overall height you order includes the threshold. Be aware of your finished floor level.
  • Sub-Frame Included: The dimensions cover the entire unit (leaf + outer sub-frame).

Final Check & Approval

Don't worry about making a mistake on the initial order form. For every custom steel doorset, we will always create a technical drawing for your approval before manufacturing begins. This gives you a final chance to check the exact dimensions, handing, and specification against your site measurements.
