SR2 Rated Industrial Electric Roller Shutter: High Security Solution for Commercial Buildings
Understanding SR2 Security Rating in the UK Context
Security Rating 2 (SR2) represents a crucial compliance level in the UK security certification framework, established under the LPS 1175 standard administered by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), an independent division of the Building Research Establishment (BRE). SR2 designation classifies a product for medium risk domestic and low-to-medium commercial applications, and these shutters are independently tested to resist determined opportunist attacks using bodily force and tools with high mechanical advantage.
Specifically, SR2-rated products must withstand sustained attacks using hand tools such as crowbars, bolt cutters, pliers, axes, and gas torches for a minimum of 3 minutes. This certification level is widely recognised by UK insurance providers, making SR2-compliant doors essential for buildings seeking insurance premium reductions and demonstrable security compliance.
The practical significance of SR2 certification extends beyond mere compliance—it signals to insurers, stakeholders, and potential threat actors that a building has invested in independently verified security infrastructure. For commercial properties, particularly retail outlets, leisure facilities, and industrial warehouses, achieving SR2 certification is often a prerequisite for standard insurance coverage at competitive rates.
Product Specification: Direct-Drive 3-Phase Industrial Roller Shutter
This high-quality, electrically operated, industrial-grade steel roller shutter utilises a standard gauge 18 SWG (standard wire gauge) steel curtain with a 75mm scrolled lath profile and is specifically engineered for the UK commercial market. The traditional build configuration is designed primarily for internal face-fit applications, which is the predominant installation method in commercial buildings, particularly those with steel frame construction.
⚠️ Critical Compliance Requirement
This roller shutter door MUST be face-fitted internally to achieve and maintain SR2 certification. The guides, complete roll of the curtain, and all mechanical components must be entirely positioned behind the structural opening and completely concealed from the exterior. If installed between the structural frame or externally, SR2 certification compliance becomes impossible, rendering the product ineligible for insurance-backed security endorsement. This internal mounting requirement ensures that external forces cannot target or manipulate the mounting mechanism or guide rails.
Motor and Drive System
The shutter incorporates a high-power 3-phase direct motor drive system operating at 415V, delivering superior longevity and reliability compared to single-phase alternatives. This configuration is engineered specifically for the UK market and facilitates substantially more operational cycles per day, making it ideal for medium-to-high use, heavy-duty commercial environments.
Advantages of Direct-Drive Technology:
- Significantly fewer moving components than traditional chain-driven or belt-driven alternatives
- Measurably reduced long-term wear and tear
- Motor power transfers directly to the roller door barrel via the shortest mechanical pathway
- Maximises operational efficiency across the largest door sizes
- Inherently quieter in operation
- More reliable performance in high-cycle environments
- Smooth, consistent performance on every cycle
The 415V three-phase supply provides consistent power delivery and is standard in UK commercial premises. This motor configuration ensures the most efficient energy transfer and optimal mechanical performance on every cycle.
Installation and Operational Constraints
Direct-drive 415V motor roller shutters are exclusively available in an outboard motor configuration. Installers and building managers must ensure adequate sideroom is available at one end of the door structure to accommodate the motor assembly. This is a fixed requirement and should be verified during the survey and specification phase to prevent installation complications.
Material Specification and Durability
The curtain utilises a single-skin galvanised steel construction with a 75mm scrolled lath design fabricated from 18-gauge steel. Both the side guides and endplates are manufactured from galvanised steel, providing consistent corrosion resistance and durability across all components.
Galvanised finish offers protection against rust and degradation in typical UK commercial environments, including properties exposed to moisture, salt air (relevant for coastal locations), and industrial atmospheres. The galvanised construction ensures the door maintains its structural integrity and aesthetic appearance over extended service life, with minimal maintenance requirements beyond standar

Emergency Manual Override System
Curtain Construction & Material
The SeceuroDoor 7502 (Industrial) features a heavy-duty 18-gauge galvanised steel single-skin curtain with a robust 75mm scrolled lath profile. This traditional build industrial roller shutter provides superior corrosion resistance and structural durability. It is available in a standard galvanised finish or a wide range of powder-coat colours to match your business branding.
⚠️ Critical Installation Requirement for SR2 Certification
TO ACHIEVE THE LPS 1175 SR2 SECURITY RATING, THIS SHUTTER MUST BE FACE-FITTED INTERNALLY.
The guide rails and the complete curtain roll must be positioned entirely behind the structural opening and must not be visible from the outside. If the shutter is installed externally or fitted "between" the opening (reveal fit), the SR2 certification is void and compliance is not achieved.
Electric Motor and Control Systems
Powered by a high-performance GfA Direct-Drive Three-Phase (415V) Motor, this industrial door is designed for frequent, reliable operation. It can be controlled via two primary methods:
Option 1: Internal Push Button (Hold-to-Run)
The standard, cost-effective method uses a wall-mounted push button with "hold-to-run" logic. The operator must hold the button for the full duration of the cycle. This removes the legal requirement for safety edges or beams, keeping installation simple and costs low. (Note: A separate pedestrian entry door is required for this method).
Option 2: Impulse Operation (One-Touch)
For greater convenience, an advanced wall-mounted control panel can be specified for "impulse" operation. A single press of the button automatically opens or closes the door. This system includes a safety edge detection system built into the bottom rail to instantly stop and reverse the door if an obstacle is detected.

Measuring Guide: Industrial Electric Roller Shutters (SR Rated)
IMPORTANT: MANDATORY FACE-FIT INSTALLATION
To comply with the certified Security Rating, this door MUST be installed internally to the face of the opening. Installation "between" the opening (reveal fit) or externally is NOT permitted and will void the certification.
For all industrial electric roller shutter doors equipped with an industrial motor (single or three-phase), the measuring, pricing, and ordering dimensions are defined by the OPENING WIDTH and GUIDE HEIGHT. These dimensions exclude the guides for the width and the endplates for the height. Please refer to the measuring diagram below.
ORDERING WIDTH = Opening Width (Clear width between the guides)
ORDERING HEIGHT = Guide Height (Floor to top of guides, excluding endplates)
Critical Dimensions & Motor Sideroom
Unlike tube motor doors, the overall width at the high level (where the barrel and endplates are fitted) will be wider than the overall width across the guides. This width can vary significantly depending on whether you choose an Inboard or Outboard motor setup.
- Outboard Motor: The motor is mounted externally on the endplate. This setup requires more sideroom on the motor side compared to the non-motor side.
- Motor Type Impact: The choice between a Chain Drive or Direct Drive motor will also affect the total width required at the head of the door.
Endplates & Headroom
The size of the endplates (and hood, if fitted) will vary depending on the specific door model and the total height of the door, as taller doors create a larger curtain roll. Please ensure you have sufficient headroom above the ordering height to accommodate this.
- Manual Override: The emergency manual override (included as standard) is located on the same side as the motor internally. Access is directly underneath the endplate. Alternative positions are available on request.
Face Fit - Behind the Opening (Required)
This industrial roller shutter is designed to be installed to the inside face of the structural opening. This "Face Fit" ensures the entire guide and coil mechanism sits behind the fabric of the building, providing maximum security.
In a perfect scenario, your ordering dimensions (Daylight Opening) will be equal to the clear space between the guides and underneath the endplates.
Important Note on Hangdown: Be aware that ANY roller shutter will have a degree of ‘hangdown’ (the bottom slat visible in the opening) when fully raised. This means the final drive-through height will be slightly less than the Guide Height. This varies by model and curtain specification. If your drive-through height is critical, please speak to us first to determine the best height to order.
