If there is anything good to come from the recent riots it is the possible relaxation of the draconian and insane restrictions for physical security to be fitted to high street shops.
Currently, all shutters need planning ¬permission and to obtain that permission requires submission of photos, a site survey, technical drawings, a design statement and a cheque for £190. Applications generally take eight to 12 weeks to be processed. However it looks as though these restrictions may be made more realistic.
According to a statement on planningportal.gov.uk it would appear that the government is set to take a more realistic approach to granting permissions for the installation of security shutters. This change of direction was highlighted in a letter sent to local planning authorities from Steve Quarterman, the chief planner for the Communities and Local Government advising them how to offer assistance and help to shops and businesses affected by the recent rioting and looting. Steve Quarterman is advocating the prioritisation of planning applications for security shutters and grilles and, in certain cases making Local Development Orders to grant automatic planning permission.
There is still a concern about the appearance of the high street being compromised and many councils may still insist upon internal shutters. Whilst it is understandable that retailers feel vulnerable there are shutters such as SWS SecueuroShield 3801 (internally or externally fitted) that offers really effective resistance to attacks. Alternatively if you must have internal folding grilles then the SWS SeceuroGuard 1001 offers the same protection and is slightly more economical – this also leave the displays to be seen even when closed.
Both of the products mentioned above are tested and approved to LPS 1175. This certifies that the products have been manufactured to an exceptionally high standard and are officially recognised for their resistance in the face of a determined attack. As a further reinforcement to their performances, the SeceuroShield 3801 security shutter and SeceuroGuard 1001 retractable security grille have successfully undergone Secured By Design evaluation and are able to display the "Police Preferred Specification" mark. Secured By Design identifies technical standards and evaluations which test the competence of security products and their resistance to criminal attack.
