SeceuroFire Flame Shutter - Fire Rated Roller Shutter

Certified Fire Protection with Integrated Security Performance

The SeceuroFire Flame Shutter is a fully certified, electrically operated fire-rated roller shutter designed to provide passive fire compartmentation whilst functioning as a practical security barrier during normal building operations. Manufactured to the latest British and European fire safety standards, this vertical fire shutter combines tested fire integrity with intelligent control systems and reliable battery backup for critical life safety applications.

Dual-Function Fire and Security Protection

Unlike basic fire curtains that remain open during normal use, the SeceuroFire Flame Shutter functions as an active security barrier throughout the day, automatically closing to form a fire-resistant compartment barrier when triggered by fire alarm signals or emergency situations. This dual functionality makes it particularly valuable for retail units, shopping centres, commercial kitchens and internal building separations where both fire safety and security are essential.

The shutter operates as a powered barrier under normal circumstances, descending automatically when connected to a building's fire detection system. In the event of mains power failure, the intelligent battery backup system ensures the shutter will still close reliably—maintaining life safety protection for up to 30 days after power loss through advanced hibernation technology that preserves battery capacity.

Tested Fire Performance & UK Compliance

The SeceuroFire Flame Shutter has been independently tested and approved by Warrington Fire (report 413395) and meets current UK Building Regulations requirements for fire-resisting roller shutters:

  • BS EN 16034:2014: Fire resisting shutters - product standard and fire performance characteristics
  • BS EN 13241-1:2003: Shutters, gates and doors - product standard and performance requirements
  • BS EN 1634-1:2008: Fire resistance test for door and shutter assemblies
  • BS 476: Part 22: 1987: Fire resistance of non-loadbearing elements (legacy standard)
  • CE Marking: Fully compliant with mandatory CE marking requirements introduced in November 2019

Fire Integrity Ratings Available:

The SeceuroFire system offers exceptional flexibility with a choice of four integrity ratings to suit specific Building Regulations requirements and compartmentation strategies:

  • E30: 30 minutes integrity - suitable for low-risk internal separations
  • E60: 60 minutes integrity - standard commercial fire compartmentation
  • E120: 120 minutes integrity - enhanced protection for high-risk areas
  • E240: 240 minutes integrity - exceptional performance for critical separations (independently tested by Exova Warringtonfire, report 312862)

This range of integrity options allows specifiers to select precisely the right level of fire resistance without over-specifying, keeping costs proportionate whilst ensuring full Building Regulations compliance and approval by Building Control authorities.

Construction & Components

Curtain Profile:

The fire-resisting curtain is formed from single-skin galvanised steel slats in two profile options:

  • 75mm Scrolled Profile: Curved interlocking design providing structural rigidity and smooth descent (standard specification)
  • 50mm Flat Profile: Lower-profile alternative for limited headroom applications

Curtain weight varies from 10 kg/m² (50mm flat) to 10-16.5 kg/m² (75mm scrolled, depending on size and integrity rating). All slats are manufactured from galvanised steel as standard, with powder coating to any RAL or BS colour available as an optional upgrade for curtain, box, guides and bottom rail.

Bottom Rail:

Robust 'T' section steel bottom slat (49mm high x 74mm deep) provides positive closure against the floor seal and withstands impact from normal building traffic.

Guide Rails:

3mm thick galvanised steel channel guides are available in three depths (50mm, 65mm or 100mm) depending on shutter width and structural requirements. Guides are mounted on steel fixing angles and can be specified for either face-mounted or reveal-mounted installations to suit building construction and aesthetic requirements.

Shutter Box Assembly:

Galvanised steel endplates are welded to form a flag arrangement with a two-piece box cover. The modular box design is supplied in sleeved sections (250mm, 300mm or 350mm depths depending on curtain height) to allow for thermal expansion during fire exposure. The chamfered box profile provides a neat architectural appearance whilst accommodating the larger curtain roll diameters required for higher integrity ratings.

Axle & Barrel:

Round steel barrels in various diameters (101.6mm to 6⅝ inches) with wall thickness from 1.6mm to 3.2mm are selected according to shutter size, curtain weight and structural loading requirements.

Motor & Drive System

The SeceuroFire Flame Shutter is powered by a 240V AC tubular motor installed within the curtain barrel. The motor is supplied with a 2.5m 4-core cable as standard and integrates directly with the fire control system and battery backup unit.

Unlike gravity-fail systems that rely on counterweights or springs, the SeceuroFire uses a powered descent system with intelligent battery backup. This approach delivers several critical advantages:

  • Controlled Closure Speed: Powered descent prevents dangerous free-fall that could injure building occupants
  • Obstacle Detection: Motor control allows for safety edge systems and obstacle detection during emergency closure
  • Hibernation Technology: Battery backup unit can maintain closure capability for up to 30 days after mains power failure
  • Self-Monitoring: Control systems continuously monitor battery charge and system integrity

Intelligent Control Systems

SeceuroFire shutters are available with four UKAS-tested control and battery backup combinations, all of which include integrated battery backup as standard. Each control option has been fully fire-tested as part of the complete assembly to ensure proven reliability in emergency situations:

FC+ Control Panel (Plug & Play)

The FC+ is a compact relay-based control system ideal for integration into existing building management systems (BMS) or fire alarm panels. The small control unit is perfect for tight installation spaces and provides simple plug-and-play connection to the battery backup unit. This option is typically specified where the building has a sophisticated fire alarm system and the shutter simply needs to respond to closure signals.

SF1 Control Panel (Local Detection)

The SF1 panel provides standalone fire detection capability with connections for local heat or smoke detectors, making it ideal for buildings without comprehensive fire alarm systems or where the shutter protects an egress route requiring independent local detection. The panel includes built-in audio and visual warning devices to alert building occupants during closure, and integrates fully with the battery backup system.

SFP Control Panel (Programmable Features)

The SFP panel offers enhanced functionality including programmable closure delays, enabling building occupants to complete evacuation before full compartmentation occurs. Audio and visual warning systems provide clear alerts, and the panel accommodates additional safety accessories such as break-glass emergency stop points and external warning beacons. The SFP is commonly specified for retail, leisure and public buildings where occupant behaviour needs to be managed during evacuation.

SFP+ Control Panel (Override Capability)

The SFP+ provides all the features of the SFP with the addition of a closing override button. This allows authorised personnel (such as fire wardens or emergency responders) to temporarily halt the shutter's descent during exceptional circumstances where evacuation is still in progress. This feature is only specified where fire officers and health & safety advisors deem it necessary, and is subject to specific risk assessment and approval by Building Control.

Battery Backup Technology

All SeceuroFire control systems include intelligent battery backup as standard—a critical safety feature that ensures the shutter will close even during prolonged power outages:

  • Hibernation Mode: Advanced power management technology minimises battery drain, maintaining closure capability for up to 30 days after mains power failure
  • Self-Monitoring: Continuous battery charge monitoring with fault indication and alarm output
  • Energy Management: Intelligent systems ensure sufficient stored energy is always available to complete a full closure cycle
  • Quick Installation: Battery backup brackets simplify mounting and enable rapid commissioning
  • UKAS Testing: All control/battery combinations are fully tested through accredited test laboratories as complete assemblies

The hibernation feature is based on the battery backup unit being fully charged and the shutter remaining in its normal "open" position. Fire systems should be tested weekly in accordance with BS 5839 recommendations, with any faults rectified prior to the next scheduled test.

Installation Flexibility

The SeceuroFire Flame Shutter's modular design allows for both face-fitted and reveal-fitted installations, providing architects and specifiers with flexibility to integrate fire shutters into various building constructions:

  • Face Fit: Box and guides mounted to the face of the opening, ideal for retrofit applications or where reveal depth is limited
  • Reveal Fit: Components concealed within the opening reveal for a flush, architecturally integrated appearance
  • Substrate Options: Suitable for fixing to masonry, concrete or fire-protected steel with at least equivalent fire resistance to the shutter's rating
  • Post-Order Modification: Modular design features enable on-site adjustment and modification where building conditions differ from original drawings

Size Capabilities

  • Minimum Width: 800mm
  • Maximum Width: 7,000mm (varies according to integrity rating)
  • Minimum Height: 800mm
  • Maximum Height: 4,600mm

Note: Maximum sizes vary according to the specified integrity rating and structural conditions. Larger shutters may require hood support brackets to manage the increased curtain weight and roller diameter. Consult factory for specific size limitations based on your required fire rating and site conditions.

Optional Features & Accessories

  • Powder Coating: Factory-applied powder coat finish to any RAL or BS colour for curtain, box, guides and bottom rail
  • Key Switch: Lockable manual operation switch for authorised personnel
