Roller Doors

A Roller Garage Door is the perfect solution when space is limited inside your garage and even outside on your driveway, as the door does not swing out when operating. Samson Doors offer a variety of high quality electric insulated aluminium roller doors to suit all budgets and sizes for domestic and commercial projects.

Our main emphasis is making sure you get the right controls for your new door and we offer our own range with simple, hard wired button controls for those of you who do not like technology or wireless products and then we have remote control models as well as smart controlled doors in varying specifications.

With so many roller garage doors now being produced on the UK market we try to simplify the buying process and also offer the simplest access control options too for those customers who just don't need remote control because they don't put their car in their garage or use it as another room.

Manual and Electric Roller Garage Doors

We have manual operated and electric operated door models with varying features, performances and colour finish options.

Our aluminium ranges cover all the variations for every requirement or budget:

  • 77mm double skinned options for garage sizes up to 6m wide
  • Compact 55mm curtain models for smaller single garages
  • Solid colour or woodgrain finish paint options
  • Made to measure sizes in every model offered
  • Push button, Remote control and Smart control models in our SRD77 Range
  • Security rated models with Secured by Design Accreditation and LSP1175 SR1 certification for higher security applications with Seceuroglide doors
  • Proven high quality from long standing brands with guarantees up to 7 years
  • Manual options for single garage sizes

Aluminium Roller Garage Doors

The majority of our electric roller doors are manufactured from 77mm double skinned, foam filled aluminium slats with some 55mm slat options where the garage is single size and security isn't so much of an issue. The aluminium slats are slightly different from each manufacturer so don't be fooled to believe all insulated aluminum roller doors are the same on the UK market.

Cheap Aluminium Roller Doors

There are many low quality aluminium slats on the market that come with cheap electric motors and controls too so the provider can hit a price point to gain attention online. Be wary of very cheap aluminium doors because any garage door made to a low price will inevitably have cheap components and this will lead to very early failure as it has so many moving parts, many in contact with each other during operation. Often these roller doors are in fact roller shutters for windows and light and heat insulation and not made to be a door.

Security

The security for any electric roller door is paramount for most people. Look for high quality side guides and with a 77mm curtain ideally these are at least 70mm wide. Look for at least a basic physical locking mechanism in the top of the door as it is only there the motor and barrel can provide locking with some higher end models offering patented anti lift locking blocks and other methods to prevent a roller curtain being simply lifted up from outside.

Summary of common security features:

  • Enhanced steel endplates to hold the roller barrel
  • Larger 100mm fluted barrel for extra overall strength
  • Extruded aluminium locking hinges to the top of the curtain
  • Increased reinforcement in the bottom of the side guides
  • Patented webbing holding the slats together to avoid forced access attempts
  • Larger 90 or 100mm side guides
  • Patented auto lock systems holding the whole curtain down when fully closed

These features are all available in products like the Seceuroglie Excel, for those who want proper security. The peace of mind from a door which is 'Secured by Design' and insurance approved to level 1 rating by the LPCB is all relevant to any of you keeping valuable items, vehicles and motorbikes inside your garage.

FAQs

How Does an Electric Roller Garage Door Work?

In nearly every electric roller door for a domestic garage use the motor used is an internal 'tube' or 'barrel' motor which is a long electric motor sitting inside a metal barrel which the roller curtain attaches to. The motor turns this barrel when powered and it can be in either direction to roll up the attached curtain or roll it down. In effect it is just like any of your internal roller blinds using gravity to close the door and electric power to lift the door back up.

When the roller door is remote or smart controlled then the door needs separate safety controls to ensure the door cannot lower onto an obstacle. If the door is a hold to run logic using a simple wall button or keyswitch then the person operating the door is the safety for the electric motor drive and no safety devices are required as long as the person can see the whole door when operating it.

Every roller garage door motor should have at least an internal manual override system in case of a power failure which is a winding handle system from inside the garage. External overrides are also available if you have no access to the garage apart for the roller door.

What are the Best Controls for a Roller Garage Door?

The best controls for your electric roller door are ones which suit your personal or household habits in terms of how you go to your garage when you want to access it. If you use your garage regularly for storing your vehicle then remote controls or nowadays smartphone controls make sense. You open your garage from inside your car and close it after you and repeat when leaving your garage. Smart controls allow you to operate the garage door from anywhere if you require and maybe you can let people into your garage or have deliveries put inside your garage when you are at work or away?

If however, you do not put your vehicle in your garage and like many people use your garage as another room to your home, or perhaps you rarely go to the garage at all, then the best option here might just be a button control inside the access side door, or a key switch control externally. With either or both controls on a hold to run logic, you also do not require any complex electronic safety devices. Hard wired controls are still a favourite with many people as you have a simple and safe interaction between the controls and the door. If there is any problem then fault diagnosis is simple. Samson Doors offer you the choice of all these options in our own SRD77 range.

How Secure Can a Roller Garage Door be?

So many people don't even consider that a cheap low quality shutter door really doesn't have any form of locking at all and the roller curtain just hangs in the tracks when closed. On a single garage this curtain could be fairly light and easily lifted by anyone from the outside.

Various forms of locking exist in either top locking components which hold the roller door curtain down when closed with the electric motor doing the holding. Enhanced systems do the same but also have physical blockers which prevent the curtain from being lifted when closed as the curtain has a reinforced top section which sits under solid blocks when closed holding the curtain in place.

Additional manual locking can be included with a roller garage door to lock the curtain in the guides, perhaps for those who leave the property for many weeks at a time. Shut the door, switch off the power and lock the curtain in place until you need to open again.

Of course the overall integrity and strength also has a big influence on security. The depth and quality of the curtain slats used. How the slats are connected to each other. The side guides and their size and overall strength. The barrel size and method of curtain connection to the barrel, and so on. Simply put, low quality roller garage doors will inevitably be quiet insecure whilst high quality doors with high specification components will be far superior in resisting forced attack attempts.
