Are acoustic steel doorsets available and when are they needed?
Yes, absolutely… and they are often overlooked until the building is finished and everyone realises the door is the weak point. An acoustic doorset is built to reduce sound transmission through the opening using the right leaf construction and, just as importantly, the right perimeter sealing. If you have a plant room, generator room, workshop, bin store with compactors, or any area that creates nuisance noise, an acoustic doorset can make a huge difference. The performance is usually expressed as an Rw value (dB), but don’t get too hung up on a headline number if the surrounding walls, gaps or vents let noise leak around it. That’s why the frame details, thresholds and tolerances matter so much. Acoustic performance can also be combined with other requirements such as fire rating and sometimes security, but not every combination is possible in every size and with every hardware set. The correct way to specify this is to start with the problem (noise source and acceptable level) and then choose the tested doorset to suit.
