What is the Difference between a Fire Door and a Fire Shutter?

A fire door and a fire shutter both provide fire resistance, but they are designed for different situations and work in different ways.

A fire door is a hinged doorset in a frame, usually providing everyday pedestrian access as well as fire compartmentation. It is tested and rated to hold back fire and often smoke for a set period, and it is fitted with closers, seals and certified hardware so it will close and latch reliably in a fire. People pass through a fire door in normal use, so it must balance life safety performance with regular operation and, where required, emergency escape.

A fire shutter is a fire rated roller shutter that normally sits open above an opening and closes automatically when triggered by a fire alarm or local detector. It is typically used to protect larger or wider openings such as serving hatches, counters, shopfronts or industrial openings where a conventional hinged fire door is not practical. Once deployed, the shutter forms a fire resisting barrier for its rated period but is not usually intended as a primary pedestrian route or escape door in day to day use.
