What is the Difference between a Roller Shutter Door and a Sectional Door?

A roller shutter door and a sectional door both lift vertically, but they are built very differently and suit different applications. They are also very frequently mixed up on architects’ drawings, with the specification text describing one type and the visual showing the other, even though they are very different products in terms of mechanics and performance.

A roller shutter door is made from many small interlocking slats that roll up into a compact coil above the opening. It usually requires minimal internal headroom, is very robust against knocks, and is ideal where space is tight or there are services close behind the lintel. The trade off is that insulation, sealing and noise reduction are generally more limited, and the curtain is less rigid than a panelled door.

A sectional door is made from larger, insulated panels that run on tracks, rising vertically then back horizontally into the building. This gives excellent thermal performance, better sealing and a very stable, smooth operation, which is ideal for energy efficiency and frequent use. However, it needs more internal space for the tracking and panel travel, and the installation is more involved than a simple roller arrangement, which is why getting the correct type clearly specified at design stage is so important.
