What are the Disadvantages of Roller Garage Doors?
A roller door is actually quite a flawed product in that it rolls around itself multiple times and effectively has around 28 gaps between each slat on an average height garage.
If a roller door is not manufactured to high standard then it will very quickly damage itself and start to look tired and old with damaged paint surfaces and possibly even damage to the aluminium slats themselves. Of course roller doors also have only one design to offer but in different colours
With cheaper, low quality roller doors, these are very common issues:
- Slow opening speed with low quality motor and smaller than normal barrel for the curtain to roll around..
-
Noisy motor, which also may not have any form of locking for the curtain when closed so is very insecure
-
Not particularly good insulation values compared to insulated hinged or sectional doors if this is important to you
-
Small thin slats and guides, which don’t lend themselves to great stability or security and can even have curtains which blow in when exposed to strong winds.
-
Poor paint finish which scratches easily and also scratches by itself when rolling.
-
Poor overall components leading to failure in multiple points very quickly
Don’t be put off by any of the above because there are really good roller garage doors out there but they are generally seen as too expensive when compared to so many budget models driven hard by many companies. High quality roller garage doors can provide many many years of trouble free use, but they will probably start with prices around £1,600 upwards fitted to be any good. Double width garages definitely need high quality roller doors to offer decent reliability and longevity.
