What Is A Sectional Garage Door?

A sectional door is a door divided into several panels and split horizontally. The door panels are designed to lift vertically and then curve and track into the garage/building to end up sitting horizontally flat usually providing a full drive through clearance when opened.

The sectional door or "overhead" type garage door is finally catching on in the UK and with all the benefits of a roller door, but with more designs and variations in panel performance, window options and mechanism configurations it is not surprising.
The benefits are obvious in so many ways, vertical operation, with no swing out, double skinned and very strong steel or aluminium panel construction, insulated panels with high levels of insulation and very well sealed all round due to their basic construction and operation method as well as weather seals on all sides.
On top of this the sectional door can be easily manufactured up to 8000mm wide and also 3000mm high for domestic use and far larger for commercial use (up to 10m wide and 8m high).

The operation and mechanism for a sectional door provides a very smooth operation, placing very little strain on any components and therefore offering a door with a very long lifespan compared to other doors. This is a technically sound and ideal garage or commercial door and can also be purchased in so many different styles and almost any colour finish required, with windows, designer elements and lighting options to give a totally individual look for your home. The panel surface externally can also be specified to be smooth, woodgrain, stucco, micro ribbed and a few other finishes to help match or contrast a building finish.

Very tough woodgrain laminates are available with excellent timber effect finishes in most manufacturers and these will have a 10 year guarantee in most cases.

The sectional door was originally designed to fit to the inside face of a garage structural opening, but over the years various bracket sets and fascias have been produced to enable the door to fit in-between a structural opening as the demand for this position is high in the UK where often we are struggling for space internally, as well as trying to miss various obstacles too.

One of the most beneficial features of a sectional garage door is the ability to seal, secure and insulate an opening. The general double skinned panel design provides very high levels of insulation and when fitted behind a structural opening with additional weather seals and more recent insulation specific seals the results can be outstanding. With these high levels of insulation and panel strength also comes security too. A sectional door is very difficult to break through without specialised tools.

The Hormann LPU F42 sectional door range for example, fitted in accordance with instructions and when using one of the Bi Secure electric operators carries a 'secured by design' rating. Any of the higher quality double skinned sectional doors generally sold in the UK and fitted with a modern electric operator and without a handle presents a very difficult barrier for any would be thief.

Samson Doors offer probably the largest range of sectional doors anywhere in our online shop with various leading manufacturers and standard or purpose made size options to choose from.

Where there may be issues internally it is always worth speaking directly to us as there is usually a solution which may not be obvious or available in our shop. ??  One of the main features of a sectional door is the tracking as this carries the panels up and then into the building however it is perfect possible to specify the height of the tracks before they curve into your garage to maximise headroom internally, These are known as "high lift" tracks but do need some discussion in order to specify correctly, especially if you are wanting to automate the door.? It is also possible to have the tracks go straight up the inside of the wall as a vertical lift arrangement so the flexibility for installation is enormous.?

Sectional garage doors can all be either manual or electrically operated at any size at all.
