Retractable Grilles for Security

Steel collapsible security grilles are an excellent physical security product for both domestic and commercial premises alike. They are simple in their operation, durable in their design and mechanism, with very little maintenance ever required, apart from cleaning to keep the tracks running smoothly. Made to measure to the millimetre, they can be adapted for security on doors, windows and large open spaces as dividers or pedestrian traffic control.

In the UK, retractable security grilles are commonly specified where customers want strong security without the closed off look of a solid shutter. Because you can still see through the grille, they are ideal for retail and shopfronts (display protection and window shopping after hours), reception areas, trade counters, kiosks, internal corridors, schools, and public buildings where controlled access is required without blocking light and visibility. They are also a popular long term security solution for homeowners who want to leave patio doors or ground floor windows open for ventilation in summer whilst keeping the opening secure.

Manufactured from galvanised steel and powder coated in a wide range of standard solid colours, these grilles can compliment any property, although in most cases they are designed to not be seen when not in use for security. Available as single or double sash arrangements the ‘stack’ or ‘bunch’ created when the grille is fully opened up can be static or hinged to swing out of the way, useful if this helps to keep the aperture clear. The bottom tracking can be fixed, hinged or totally removable again to assist in keeping doorways clear when the grille is opened and not in use.

Security Grills for Windows and Doors

Retractable security grilles can be manufactured with either a top rolling system or a bottom rolling system. Our standard grilles on offer generally are all top hanging which makes for easier operation in most cases. The installation position for retractable grilles can be in between (reveal fitted) or face fitting externally or internally, depending on available space. For most doorways face fitting is preferred to leave the opening as clear as possible.

For wider openings, grilles can be used to secure full height glazing, internal shopfronts, roller shutter style openings, and walk through access points. This makes them a practical option for businesses that need to secure stock areas at night but still want airflow and visibility during the day, or for properties with mixed use areas where you want to restrict access without creating a permanent barrier.

  • Excellent X and S lattice gate designs in superb quality powder coat colour finishes
  • Adaptable tracking and hinged stacking for best results when fitted

These sliding security gates are a great way to provide simple and easy to use security to any property, almost at any size. Our Seceuroguard systems use the very best components and unique locking systems to avoid forced attacks. We also offer security rated grilles with LPS1175 accreditation to SR1, SR2 and SR3 levels when there is a requirement for certified and rated security on a site.

Not all security grilles are the same. Be aware of the gauge of steel on the grille profiles, the quality of the galvanising and paint finishing and most of all the tracking and locking systems incorporated into the final product. The smaller details all add up for the finished product.

FAQs

Do retractable security grilles need a bottom track?

Not always. Many UK retractable grilles are top hung and only use a bottom guide, which can often be supplied as fixed, hinge-down or removable depending on the system and the opening. If you want the threshold as clear as possible (for example, a busy doorway), ask about hinge-aside stacking and removable or hinged bottom guides.

Is it better to reveal fit or face fix a retractable security grille?

It depends on your opening and what matters most. Reveal fitting sits the grille within the opening for a neater, more integrated look, whilst face fixing is often preferred on doorways because it helps keep the clear opening size. If you are unsure, send us a photo and dimensions of the opening and we can advise the best fixing method.

Can retractable security grilles be security rated in the UK (for insurance or higher risk sites)?

Yes. If you need certified, attack tested security, you can specify grilles that are tested to the UK standard LPS 1175, commonly supplied at SR1, SR2 and SR3 depending on the level of risk. This is ideal for higher value retail, commercial premises, and sites where an insurer, consultant, or specifier requires a recognised security rating.
