Are steel doorsets suitable for coastal or highly corrosive environments?

Yes… but not if you treat a coastal site like any other site. Salt‑laden air, constant wetting/drying cycles, industrial pollutants and aggressive cleaning products will find weaknesses quickly, especially on edges, fixings, hinges and thresholds. The doorset can still be steel, but it needs the right corrosion protection strategy: appropriate pre‑treatment, a suitable primer/topcoat system, and often upgraded hardware materials where required. It’s also worth thinking about detailing: water traps, cut edges, damaged coatings, poor installation tolerances and badly sealed thresholds all reduce life expectancy. Even a great doorset will suffer if it is scratched on install and never touched up, or if water sits against the frame because the substrate isn’t right. The best approach is to be honest about the exposure and usage, specify for it from day one, and then maintain it like any other external building component (regular cleaning is not “optional” near the sea). Done properly, a steel doorset can still be a very robust choice in harsh environments.
