What Is An Up And Over Garage Door?

An up and over garage door is still the most recognisable and standard types of garage door on the UK home today.

It is a one piece door panel construction and usually manufactured in steel, timber, fibreglass or Upvc either in a chassis or as a single unit moulded or jointed together. The chassis type system has become the door of choice because of its rigidity and the fact the door panel itself is actually only mainly decorative so doesn't rely on the material integrity so much.

For the single sizes of up and over garage door there are 2 types of operating mechanism for most models. The door panel is either operated by a pair of cables on either side with a tension spring sitting above the panel (known as a canopy door), or a pair of tension springs either side of the door panel retracting the door back on a pair of horizontal tracks (known as a retractable door). ?The canopy door is generally specified when only manual operation is required and the retractable door is used for heavier door panels, double doors and any door requiring electric operation using the standard boom type electric opener.

A one piece up and over garage door is probably still one of the most popular types of door in the UK and this is because it is the simplest and easiest option to go for when replacing an existing up and over door.

Up and over doors generally are manufactured up to a maximum size of 5000mm wide and 3000mm high but in more limited styles and materials at these larger sizes, the majority of doors only available up to about 4.3m wide and 2.2m high.
For larger widths than this you are generally better looking at sectional overhead type garage doors.

Up and over doors are generally not available as insulated.

There are also various high specification commercial up and over door systems for use in high security or high usage applications like public car parks. Fully vented door panels are commonly used in this case.
